Buoyancy

According to Archimedes' Principle, the buoyant force on an object in a fluid is equal to the weight of fluid displaced by the object.

Whether an object floats or sinks in a fluid depends on whether the buoyant force is greater than or less than the object's weight. This, in turn, generally depends on the relative density of the object to the density of the fluid.
