Brass monkey

A mythical creature used to tell temperature. When it gets cold enough, its balls fall off.

I once read somewhere that brass monkey used to refer to a kind of rack for holding cannon balls on sailing ships. The circumstances under which it might become cold enough to freeze the balls off such a rack remains something of a mystery. My guess is that the whole thing is an urban myth.
