Well we can talk about the mistakes of a culturally relativest approach that is unwilling to criticise, for instance, conservative muslim culture where women are regarded as 2nd class citizens. We can say that there are core values and standards within the UK that are not up for negotiation, no matter how big the group of people that demand it are. I suppose the real fear would be some time in the future when a single culture/ethnic group became a majority in the way that indigenous white British people currently are in the UK, and that, using the very democratic processes set up to try to ensure the will of the majority prevails, these fundamental rights could be undermined. To me that is where the battle lines should be drawn. People who are already in the UK need to integrate, to 'buy into' the values and mores of our society, and there should be no quarter given when they don't. Ultimately it won't matter what colour someone's skin is, or what religious or superstitions they have in their private life, if they are working, paying tax, not breaking the law, not demanding subsidies for their particular culture, etc. etc.
Don't worry, conservative Christian culture also treats women as second class citizens, so those Muslims should fit in just fine. Sexual repression, aggressive military action, patriarchal values, religious fundamentalism, I don't see any difference.
Integration has never worked, and most likely never will ....except perhaps at the point of a gun! People just don't like people that are so different to themselves. Baron Max
It could be that eventually people like me - white english - are simply in alarge minority. t makes no difference whatsoever whether people with a certain skin-colour or religion are a majority, or a large minority group in a given geographical area. So long as nobody thrusts their way of life down your throat, so long as you have the same rights, the same freedoms .. so what? Obviously should someone suggest that we bring in local Shariah law or some such I'd be first to object to it . . . but so long as people are generally rubbing along together, genuinely ,what difference does it make to you????
