1) No, it's not true. (http://www.sciforums.com/member.php?s=&action=getinfo&userid=8654)

2) Most creatures have the intellect required to fulfill the needs of their niche in the ecosystem. This a chicken is no more "stupid" than a fly of a crocodile. It simply isn't reaonable to say a chicken is stupid, if it performs everything it needs to as a chicken.

The animals that we raise for food are not the brightest individuals of their species. People who have been to countries where dogs are raised for food say that little light in their eyes just isn't there.

Chickens are like cows. They've been captive-bred for food for so many thousands of years that the wild ancestral populations have disappeared. The gene pool has been automatically selected for being dumb enough to live on a farm.

a flatworm would be more 'stupid' than a chicken...

or maybe a sponge is the most stupid animal on earth (since it has no brain whatsoever)

Are the animals really stupid for not being like us? Or are we the stupid ones, for not being like the animals?

Ignorance is bliss~

Dogs don't lose intelligence because someone's about to eat them, maybe they lose the "light in their eyes" because they're depressed. And pigs hugely contradict your theory, possibly even smarter than dogs, unfortunately they taste great and that seems to me more important to people than a sensitive and intelligent creatures well being.
As for chickens, they aren't that dumb at all, any bird will generally be smarter than a fish(there are exceptions ie the groper), reptile or insect. Regardless, just because somethings dumb doesn't mean it deserves to be crammed into a tiny cage, you said it spooks... HUMANS SUCK!

humans are fairly smart before they are forced to undergo education.

so they might win a prize in the category: Animal that is born smart, but becomes real stupid real fast

my mum raises parets. i hate ther elittle feathery selves! ive snuck borax into some of the more talkative once food. the siezures perefctly resemble a heartrattack and no1 questions the death...

actualy i hear turkeys are the dumbest.
or as some1 said sponges.
or my mother.

but chikens dont fit there need in the ecology. they fir our needs.

and btw natural chikens still exist. they evolved, supposedly, in africa. but people moved them north till they were in asia.
wild chikens are viscius and fast.
i have memories of going to my grandmas. she lived in a hevaily farmed area. and there where wild turkeys and chikens everywhere if you went into the woods. the wild chikens scared me even tho i playd w/ the farm once. its mostly cause theyr raised to be dumb. but if youve ever seen a rooster or big hen get into a fight w/ a dog you know that its NOT always the dog that wins.

Domesticated chickens can't be too bright. I've seen one roost on a ladder outside instead of going into the chickenhouse-- in January! Next day she was a hen-sickle.
