I would run scandisk first, to see if there are bad sectors. Check "thoroughly".

Then I would run defrag again.

Also: before running these programs, close everything you don't need: all the sys tray icons, and via ctrl alt del all the running processes except for explorer.

Don't forget to turn off any screen savers. They often interupt the process.

Firstly you should run scandisk like mentioned, to make sure that your harddrive is not corrupt.

However what you should also take into account is that Defrag was written for drives smaller than the one you have, so this can actually cause problems.

You might want to do either of two things:

1: Get a third party defragmentation program, there are a few out there on the market and some "claim" to be better than the OS's version.

2: Re-partition your harddrive into smaller partitions that the defrag program can cope with. I usually partition 10gb partitions, this means I can run the OS on one partition and only have to defrag and scandisk the partition that runs the OS, the others can be left longer.

    Some More Info . . .

You should also know that defragging 80 GB, takes an absolutely long time, maybe even so with 9 GB of stuff. Give it more than a few hours. Also, if you are running applications while defragging, this will cause the defragger to pause and redo a lot of its work since the open applications may be modifying the hard disk. Even if you aren't saving a file, these applications access the hard disk for many purposes, inlcuding for virtual memory use.

  8. ok i know what to do.. ctrl+alt+delete and close all things except for like explorer and all that stuff.. if ur running xp or later, you'll have to click on the processes tab. kill basically everything (kazaa, AIM, any popup killers, external programs, so the contents of the disk is not altered) then run ur defrag program,. and it should defrag just fine.

About defragmentation, the suggestion posted here are pretty much correct. I often have to wait for hours of defragmentation (30GB perpartition), plus the process may or may not successfully integrate all files thoroughly.

You should give VoptXP a try. It is what I use, and it is fast.

It is shareware, so you can see if you like it before you buy it.

  15. *cringes* I use Diskeeper.. it can sometimes get annoying, if you set it to go off every day, but its quite fast and very efficient. Also tells you fragmentation percentage.
