View Full Version : darksidZz polls - yes or no?
James R 03-25-07, 09:34 PM darksidZz (formerly known as sderenzi) was previously banned for spamming sciforums with useless polls - often sexually oriented and/or self-obsessed. He was a allowed to return under his new name.
Since his return his poll-posting has again increased. His polls are, in general, mindless. They usually offer only black-or-white "yes, no" options to complex issues. Recently, many of these polls have been about topics raised by other members.
I see these polls mostly as an attention-seeking behaviour by darksidZz, and I don't think they add much value to sciforums.
However, I realise I may be alone in this view. So, before taking any action on the matter, I thought I would poll the general readership.
Comments welcome, too. And suggestions as to what moderation is needed, if any.
James R 03-25-07, 09:41 PM For reference, here is the list of darksidZz's most recent polls:
Poll: Starbucks :-?
Poll: Cops - Watch or Not?
Poll: A.I.D.S. - Natural or Manmade?
Poll: Intelligent Design - Yes or No?
Poll: Christianity - Wrong or Right?
Poll: Worst Star Trek Series
Poll: Cellular Phone - Yes or No?
Poll: Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer
Poll: Economics - Farce or Real?
Poll: Life Achievement - Satisfied or Not?
Sports - Yes or No?
Poll: Inmated - Test, Euthanize, Leave Alone
Poll: Doughnut Wars - Choose The Best!
Poll: Employment Data Poll
Poll: Propose Forum For Polls!
The topics and options speak for themselves, I think. Particularly note the last topic on this list, and consider darksidZz's motivations for being at sciforums.
redarmy11 03-25-07, 09:44 PM Let him stay but NO MORE POLLS. Finito. End of.
redarmy11 03-25-07, 09:50 PM Bells, I only wish that were literally true. I likes 'em big.
I am a bit conflicted when it comes to his polls. On one hand, it's become an annoying habit of his and I feel they need to stop. On the other hand, some bring about good discussion.
I'd be happy just to cesspool his threads without locking them, but I'm afraid I'd be called a content controller. Maybe I shouldn't care and just do it :D
BenTheMan 03-25-07, 10:12 PM Why would you put a limit on shitty polls but not on shitty posts?
What's the difference?

If someone is around when he creates a new poll, they could do something about it before people start replying. Or, we could just let him do as he wishes but we could give him infractions. Something. I have no problem with polls, but this is annoying. I kind of like the infraction idea... after enough of them, he is temp banned and we can all take a break.

I've noticed that many of his polls have something to do with him wanting to "better himself." I remember being in a rut myself. I used to find out everything I could about what was "average" so I could blend in and be "like everyone else."
Redefine91 03-25-07, 10:20 PM I think he should get a 2 a day maximum. Some are ok, nice to see the opinions of members on matters that usually wouldn't come up but it gets irritating
BenTheMan 03-25-07, 10:32 PM I have no problem with polls, but this is annoying.
Any more annoying than some of the other bullshit threads that get started?
Redefine91 03-25-07, 10:40 PM I can deal with this

There are plenty more bullshit threads out there. If the majority of the users on SF that actually matter would support me, I could go Nazi in Free Thoughts. However, this does contradict what Free Thoughts is for, but I think SF as a whole would work best when people think before they make an idiot thread.
What we could do is set up a discussion to figure out what we want from Sciforums and what we can do when we deviate. For example, I am sure darksidZz's nonstop polling is a deviation from what we want. We'll probably debate his "problem" for a while, but we will never solve the real problems that create an environment for people like him to further fill our forum with shit.
If anyone finds a thread in Free Thoughts they they think is "bullshit," feel free to PM me the link with your argument. Report it if you like, someone else might see these reports because I don't check my e-mail.

yes.
I don't know. If you hate his polls just ignore them... If it is clear that he is starting these polls just to piss people off, then take some action. Otherwise just let him ask all the goofy quesitons he wants.
Killjoy 03-25-07, 10:59 PM They are a waste of space and he should be banned

I doubt he is starting polls to piss people off. He's obviously interested in knowing people and he's filling a void because he does not do this in real life. If he took some initiative to get out in the real world and to make new friends, we'd see less of his polls.
darksidZz 03-25-07, 11:44 PM As it is, as it always was, I knew this day would come my friends. You see I've no interest in causing troubles for the members of the forum, infact I think my polls are somewhat useful considering the following:
Intelligent Design - Yes or No?
Worst Star Trek Series
Life Achievement - Satisfied or Not?
It may be hard to understand but I really have no motivation for being here, or even for posting. My only interest has been in giving unusual but unique ideas a place for possible discussion. I came back because I was bored with the absence of talk, but I realize my way is not your way nor shall it ever be. I'm unusual, indeed odd, but those 3 things above aren't either of these... so what did they exactly do? It's not important I'd suppose... I have no interest in doing things others find annoying, never did.
I therefore must offically take my leave of you all, once and for all, forever, with no regrets... you've learned the deepest recesses of my mind, and we've talked of many things, but it's time for me to leave you.
I shall randomly type on my keyboard in notepad, then copy + paste the text into my password, thus I'll not know what it is and you can be rid of me. I'd done this before but now it isn't really valuable to stay here, go on my friends and discuss your science, etc.
Example: If I randomly type and get iaohuiotgf89762 then make it my password I'll never know if I don't look what it was, thus will ban myself. Which in just a moment I will do...
James R you weren't a bad fella, it is kinda weird to have this question cuz my topics did recieve alot of replies, just review them... but anyway I should go... I've always been alone... goodbye dragon...
leopold99 03-25-07, 11:53 PM . . ., before taking any action on the matter, . . .
uh oh.
sderenzi, you better chill out man.
It is ironic that we are questioning the validity of darksiZz's polls with a poll.:p
Athelwulf 03-26-07, 01:13 AM I say we should Cesspool them if they're just pointless polls. Otherwise, I think they're alright.

Nikelodeon 03-26-07, 02:07 AM BanTheMan
We are not Gods to decide the fate of a human, he shall live and give rise to polls and new threads because it a gift we must give him, the freedom of self expression.
I was thinking about it again. Perhaps his polls are not that bad. If no one is interested in his polls, feel free to ignore them. If they are just stupid polls with no relevance, they can be cesspooled.
voted Other.
darksidZz should be allowed to stay, on the condition he stops spamming polls, meaning no more polls, ever.
domesticated om 03-26-07, 12:34 PM I voted ban him. he's proven that he's not here to participate in the discussions. He's here to push whatever annoying gimmick he can mastermind as far as it's allowed to go. If not polls, I guarantee it will be something else down the line.

darksidZz 04-02-07, 12:02 PM Has it been decided James R. May I stay?
Nikelodeon 04-02-07, 12:02 PM I thought you randomised your password.
outlandish 04-02-07, 12:29 PM Has it been decided James R. May I stay?
poll?
darksidZz 04-02-07, 12:40 PM I did but I was so bored here at work I decided to try something. Originally I made-up an e-mail address for the username so that I couldn't do the "forgot password" thing an retrieve that random password. Anyway I actually decided to make the fake e-mail a real one, I signed up, and then came back here to say "forgot password". It worked! So now I'm back and still lonely.. so can I stay James?

francois 04-02-07, 06:42 PM sderenzi's posting/polling style and persona reminds me more of a caricature of an idiot than an idiot. Every time I see one of his polls--about something obviously complex and subjective--followed with a "yes" or "no," I just laugh. It's somewhat cute, but then again, his polls do take up a lot of space and they are tiring. I wish it was easier to ignore. I think banning him is a bit much. I think deleting any next poll with the suffix "oui ou non" should be deleted. Simple as that.

redarmy11 04-03-07, 02:13 PM The deadline approaches and the positive/negative votes are evenly split. I still think my suggestion of 'let him stay but NO MORE POLLS' is the way to go.
spuriousmonkey 04-03-07, 02:15 PM I didn't vote yet.
The Devil Inside 04-03-07, 02:25 PM i voted for clownshoes.
darksidZz 04-03-07, 02:30 PM lmao, I didn't even realize there was a deadline. Thanks man for keeping the faith, we're all very important here and each has a unique perspective on things.
As for why I've posted so many polls, well.. really I do it because the thought of just begining a thread without a solid answer to select seemed wrong, maybe it's not though.
redarmy11 04-03-07, 02:46 PM Relax, it just means you're a black/white thinker. Me too, it keeps life simple.

Also I like my Evolution - True or False thread continues to grow strong, keep up the good work.
Finally, why did he hide the votes here, kinda weird since I probably could just ask who voted what an get the truth :o
redarmy11 04-03-07, 04:20 PM I voted other: don't let you create any more annoying, useless polls. Don't mention it.

redarmy11 04-07-07, 03:51 AM Yes, is he safe yet, James? 50 polls later.
And no, sammy, luV, you and I are as strangers. Sorry.
James R 04-08-07, 09:15 PM The poll is now closed. Results are:
Negative: 8
Neutral: 3
Positive: 13
The majority of respondents don't seem perturbed about darksidZz's numerous polls, so I guess it's back to business as usual.
darksidZz 04-08-07, 11:39 PM Thank you, I will endevour not to be a burden or anoyance, I wish only to stay and be supportive of the forum. I am happy :)
grrr darksidz, fight against those who try to make ur demise. Its time 4 payback!
EmptyForceOfChi 04-11-07, 06:30 AM his polls are not the "best" in the world but nevermind, let him continue i cant see the harm, if it gets "ou of control" then the moderators will deal with it.
peace.
Hercules Rockefeller 04-12-07, 08:57 PM The serial posting by darksidZz of waste-of-bandwidth stupid meaningless polls has continued unabated and now constitutes blatant trolling (IMO). There have been several in the past week alone.
Apparantly he/she has previously been banned for spamming sciforums with useless polls - time for another dose?
Computer says yes.
James R 04-12-07, 09:04 PM Computer may say "yes", but majority of users who bothered to vote say "no".
Ain't democracy grand?
Killjoy 04-12-07, 09:46 PM It illustrates the dire consequences of not showing up to vote, at any rate...
:grumble:
I'd rather see DarksidZz polls than Baron Max's posts. Add IAC, BR, Vincent, Soduku and Roman to that too. (US Bombs Louder than Imams? Obviously the bombs don't work worth a shit! HeeHee!)
