for my purposes (usually tv and movie downloads), i find 90% of the time, even though ive downloaded something, i buy it when (if) it finally gets released. I just hate waiting, while the studios sit on their collective asses, until a release of a movie/tv series finally becomes available on dvd (i get especially annoyed when a dvd is released in the uk for example, but then not released in north america for a year, sometimes more). Once they actually make a release its better sound and picture quality (not to mention the extras) makes me get the dvds, despite the fact ive already downloaded a version of it.

Am i alone in this or do you guys do it too? I just ask because if this is a common practice perhaps it will light a fire under the studio's butts and get them releasing sooner. Also, if this is a trend (to download but still buy) it would go a long way to shutting up the doomsday prognosticators claiming that p2p will single-handedly destroy all commercial art.

just a thing ive wondered about, any input would be appreciated.

I rarely buy what i download...only if it impresses me quite much...but that only turns out to be music.

To be honest, I don't buy movies or or songs. I have no need to, and never did. I am lucky enough to live within broadcast range of a large city, so I just listened to the radio. I've just switch from radio to Kazaa.

I still do however attend movie theaters and concerts. (Nothing's the same as being there.) I'm working on getting a projector though, so (if lucky) I'll have my own personal theater soon.

I only download the occasional single or random track from a compilation I would otherwise have no interest in.

If, on the rare occasion, I do download an album I eventually buy it.

Actually, I am interested in old stuff. Mostly items that can't be purchased. Old rock and roll groups that were never reprinted when they changed formats. I have no hope of buying them, can't find them for a large portion.

Other things are items that I purchased the right to play a long time ago. Many times, maybe too many times. It is a little game they love to play. They reprint it and you buy again and again.

There is nothing in the top fourty I am interested in. Nothing in the line of movies that I want to d/l as they are for the largest part of poor quality.

I have stopped d/ling but with the jack up in prices the major labels have done, if I buy it will be indie. Screw the RIAA and its cohorts.

thats one instance in which i don't feel the slightest pang guilt for not paying. I have purchased most of my favorite recordings at least twice and as many as four times. Sometimes to upgrade to better quality and sometimes because the media it was printed on failed - if they become unplayable again i will p2p them without a second thought.

I feel very guilty when I download games (music, anime who gives a dam?!), I'm a bad bad little fetus.
