:)
xelius00 08-30-03, 02:17 PM There are really no "best" specs, you can keep making it better until you run out of money basically, by adding more RAM and such.
3.2GHZ, 2 gb of ram, 200+ gig hard drive space, Radeon 9800Pro 256MB will probably suck money out of your nose but that's about as good as you'll do for now.
Unless money grows on a tree for you, I would say to buy just slightly under the best. It'll save a lot of cash and the performance difference will be negligible.
testify 08-30-03, 03:31 PM Single proc only? COME ON! Get a dual, or a quad proc machine if you have the money. :D
You Killed Jesus 08-30-03, 06:35 PM There's the Mac G5...
Vertigoll 09-06-03, 02:43 PM I'm getting a computer -
Tell me if this is decent. Please. I'm pretty- erm, not wealthy.
Dell comp

512 sd ram
128 mb video card (pretty decent I think)
17 inch monitor
sound card is good I think
sweet Pentax 09-06-03, 02:55 PM don´t buy a ... what´s the correct term ...... a ready-system (???)
you know what i mean ,a complete pc with already installed os and so on ...
there are enough good FAQs about this topic if you don´t know how to build a pc ;it saves money and you get the parts you want ( and need )
really ,it´s damn easy !
testify 09-06-03, 06:18 PM Saves money? It costs more to build a custom system than an already made system because you're not buying it as the package. If you were to take into account the quality of the hardware if you bought it seperately compared to a whole machine, then they might be around the same price, but certainly not cheaper.
sweet Pentax 09-06-03, 09:01 PM ha ;)
show me an already made system and i show you that it would be cheaper to buy the parts apartly !!!
well ,unless your already made systems are dirty cheap .....
hope you answer
testify 09-06-03, 10:09 PM Dell Dimension 2400 (The first computer I found)
Price: $499 (USD)
Processor: Pentium 4 Processor at 2.20GHz with 400MHz front side bus

So yeah...have fun :D
EDIT: Dirt cheap like that?
sweet Pentax 09-06-03, 11:01 PM really .... impressive .....
wtf ,you call it cheap ?
they build in the smallest p4 to catch stupid people ,the rest is C-R-A-P ,nobody should buy this piece of shit ; the parts definitly don´t fit together !!!
i just remembered an episode of the simpsons ...... homer bought a computer :p
testify 09-06-03, 11:13 PM Did you say it had to be the top of the line computer? I don't think so. I know it's crap, but the equivalent computer that has parts bought individually would be more expensive than this one. The monitor alone probably accounts for half the price, if not 2/3rds. So despite how crappy this system is...I want to see a list of standalone products and their sources...and have them collectively cheaper than $499.
btw: I got this price quote at dell.com
sweet Pentax 09-06-03, 11:35 PM motherboard : epox (nforce2 ,usb2.0 ,soundcard (good enough) ,100Mbit lan , ....) 80€
cpu :athlon xp 1700 (overclocked at 2100mhz) 70€
ram : 2x256 mb dual ddr infeneon 90€
power supply : 350W 20€
graphics : radeon 9100 128mb 90€
hd : seagate barracuda 160 gb ( 8 mb chache,7200 rpm ) 160€
cd : writer-combo 50x 40€
pc-case : about 50 €
cables : 20€
620€uros so far ,this is exactly my system ; prices are 2 months old and i don´t know if it even got cheaper
os : linux ,it´s for free
monitor : a good flat monitor cost about 150€ ; i prefer to use the tv-out
internet : dsl ... a must ( 5€ and you can start)
i bet you aren´t satisfied yet :D
come on ,this systems costs slightly more (120 € ),but is up to date and more flexible for the future !
testify 09-06-03, 11:43 PM So your's costs $352 more than mine. You also forgot to include the 2 year warranty, and the fact that my machine uses an easy to use OS (you didn't say the person using it had to be proficient in linux). Also, mine came with two CD drives (I know it's not a biggy, but I REALLY REALLY hate copying my CD'sto the HD before I copy them to another CD). Yeah, little things I know. But I think I proved my point.
sweet Pentax 09-06-03, 11:49 PM linux
there are versions that are almost like windows ,especially for beginners ;also you don´t have to be a profi ,you just have to able to read a bit .....
352$
352$ ? and i swear i thought we were talking about a 500$ pc
btw ,i disproved your point ;)
edit : and i didn´t forget the warranty ,cuz every product you buy in europe has 2 years warranty :bugeye:
testify 09-07-03, 03:03 AM Looks like I have to do a bit of math here. Current Exchange rate from USD to a Euro is 1.11080
620€uros so far PLUSa good flat monitor cost about 150€EQUALS 770€
At the current exchange rates this results in $855 USD
$855 - $499 = $355 <--The difference between my system and your system
So yeah, that's the number I was refering to.
also you don´t have to be a profi ,you just have to able to read a bit ..... Ever try and teach your grandparents to use a computer with windows? Good luck trying to teach them how to use linux.
sweet Pentax 09-07-03, 06:26 AM sorry ,i forgot the weak $ :P
re:monitor
you don´t get it ,right ?
i listed parts that you perhaps not need like the 160gb hd and 512 mb ram ..... so if you only buy the "half" (80gb hd ,256mb ram) ,you´ve enough money for this monitor
Ever try and teach your grandparents to use a computer with windows? Good luck trying to teach them how to use linux
i can´t teach them windows too
mother knows how to find solitaer ,that´s all !
has nothing to with windows or linux ,but my mother ......
as i said ,there are very easy versions of unix available !
ps : download windows or borrow it from a friend ; never feed the giants with their abstruse marketing-technics !
what do you think dell does pay for 1 windows ?
(now don´t say it´s because dell buys so many licences ; it´s because they want to "force" you to buy the already built systems ! )
testify 09-07-03, 01:22 PM Dell buys each copy of windows for $15, and it probably account for $20 of the whole computer package. To me paying $20 is minuscule if I am certain my old person relative will have a better chance of using the OS. You keep on saying linux is easy to use. Which flavor/version are you refering to? Lindows? HAH!:D
