does anyone know of any well-known companies (if at all poss UK-based, but elsewhere will do) that use a wiki for knowledge capturing ?
it's just that we have a MediaWiki-based Wiki as one of the SAP portals on our new SAP server, and i'd like to stir up some interest by showing that capturing and sharing knowledge is a 'good thing' + being able to show that other companies do likewise might convince the powers-that-be that i'm not just on a wild goose chase

The only ones I can think of is usually employed by games developers for particular games to deal with the Frequently asked questions that get asked to Support/Technical.
Other companies in that field have a different form of system (Ticket system) for dealing with support issues but that usually stems from the Alpha/Beta testing prior to release allowing the knowledge base system to acquire some helpful Q:A's on release.

not sure whether we're talking about the same type of knowledge capturing here : what i was thinking of was more trying to capture the knowledge in people's heads, so that when someone retires his knowledge doesn't disappear from the company's collective knowledge base

The only one I can think of is Trac, but that's more for developers, as Stryder was mentioning.
What's wrong with using MediaWiki?

nothing's wrong with MediaWiki
it's just that i have a hard time convincing our business analysts that Wikis can be of benefit to the business by making it possible to share and retain knowledge within the company, and do this type of job far better than, say, Lotus Notes databases

what bothers me most is that when you do a search on the web you get upbeat articles (e.g. news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6171399.stm) on how wikis are being taken up by businesses, but no details or names
... Businesses have started to embrace the wiki model to allow employees to collaborate and communicate about projects, while special-interest groups are also using them to share ideas.
really frustrating ...

Electronic Arts uses an internal wiki knowledge base to document design specs, configuration specs, discoveries, IP, and FAQ's.
