im using windowsxp, and i cant install windows media player 8.
it claims i already hav the latest version of media player.

i was using version 8, but
yesterday, i instaled media player 9.
then, it refused to play anything so i deleted it.

i coudnt seem 2 delete the windows media player folder from my program files.

i tried deleting the contents of the folder (even in the dos prompt), but they kept reappearing after a few seconds.

then i deleted them and smashed restart b4 they had the chance 2 reappear.
it worked.
the files wer gone wen the computer restarted.

but the folder still wont delete.
it claims that it can not delete due 2 the fact that it is being used by another person or program.

furthermore, i downloaded media player 8 so i can reinstall that, but it claims i still hav the latest version and will not continue.

does anybody know how 2 get rid of watever trace of media player i hav so that i can install version 8 back on my computer.

have you got the latest service pack?

oh an btw- don't install Win MPlayer 9 - it's a complete spyware

I think you messed up the registry and that reinstalling windows is a good idea

you can unistall it if you have the latest windows xp service pack from MS.
you can still keep WMP8 though - if you shut down its access to internet through a firewall

You cannot uninstall mediaplayer or Internet explorer from an XP system. I dont think the service pack is out yet to fix it, but as it stands you cant delete it because m$ was trying to monopolize (sp) the mp3 player and web browsing.

so after deleting whatever i could that had 2 do with media player, i reinstalled the xp operating system.
i now hav windows media player 8 again, but it still refuses 2 play any of my files. none of my music or movies will play on it at all.
same error that occured wen i 1st downloaded and installed wmp9.

get another player then, there are many good alternatives

- it's hard to say what's wrong if I'm not at the computer.

The old media player 6.4 is always there when you need it. Just go to "%windir%\program files\windows media player" and run mplayer2.exe. You are all set. It plays everything and allows you to adjust codec setting on the fly.
