I'm trying to help someone with a broadband cable connection for a sony vaio laptop, running windows XP home edition, which had been working fine until he briefly installed and used AOL dial-up while on a trip and then uninstalled it. All the settings that I'm familiar with are as they were before he installed AOL and it says in the control panel that the connection is open and active but when trying to access web pages internet explorer tells me that there is no connection available. I know that the problem is with the computer and not the ISP as it works fine with my computer. I'm not too familiar with PCs, does anyone have an idea what the problem could be?

well, try Start-Settings-Control Panel-Networking. If it's XP, good luck getting the right dialog box to come up. Make sure that the IP address it is set to be aquired by DHCP.

Also, try unplugging the cable modem's power for a minute and then plugging it back in. Restart the machine and see what happens. Some cable modems (maybe all of them) keep track of the network card's unique hard-coded ID.
