my girlfriend gave me a call last night and told me about what she had been lectured on by some high ranking medical official. so, i do not know about the validity of anything i am about to ask about, but that is why i am posting... if any one any more info on this please let me know or definetely post the links! this may be old news to some people (oops!) but to me it was interesting, i just want to learn more about it. here goes...
smallpox, the very very deadly disease, was thought to be have been exterminated years ago. when the vaccines were spread around the entire existence of the disease was nearly ended.... nearly. 2 cultures of the disease remained in savannah (sp?) georgia, i think this was in the 70's? someone correct me... any ways... 1 of the cultures was sent to russia for study, and one remained here in the u.s. a few years later the cold war begins, and in an attempt to create a bio-chemical weapon, russia starts to breed (? is this what it's called?) smallpox.
in the end russia has succeeded in making just about enough smallpox to destroy to world 5 times over. yes 5 times!!! the cold war ends, with no need for these newly developed disease cultures... so what happens? the u.s. tries to find all remaining cultures of the disease but only suceeds in finding about 10% of what russia had produced... this means that 90% were missing... what happened ? well the 90% was somehow distributed among the black markets. to this date the u.s. does not know what happened to the remaining samples of the disease. the government must assume the worst case scenario, of course, and prepare for a smallpox attack.
a decade ago (or about, again i am not clear on the facts) a vaccination program was started in the u.s. it was set up in 3 phases which are as follows:
phase 1: the top military, government, and medical officials would all be vaccinated. this is logical because they are the ones that must be safe when distributing the vaccination, or leading the country.
phase 2: 10% or roughly that amount of the physicians in the u.s. will be vaccinated, in preparation for an attack or spread of the disease by other means.
phase 3: the population of the u.s. will be offered the vaccine on a voluntary and optional basis.
according to this doctor that my girlfriend spoke to, good ol president bush has stopped this vaccination process. phase 1 has been completed, but at the beginning of phase 2 president bush has ordered a halt. phase 3 was supposed to occur in february of 2004, but now it is stopped indefinetely.
okay if any one has any info on this, i'd love to read through it! maybe this is old news? i really don't know, it's definetely new to me though. as far as the person that got all the info to my girlfriend, it was during a presentation to medical students training in the e.r. of a new york city hospital. so what does everyone think?
