I've been getting consistently fast page loads. Have you tried tracrouting the site a few times to see if there are any intermeidate bottlnecks in the hop list?

John does that not worry you that you stopped features of your AV software now it is faster. The AV software was likely slow due to checks and possibly blocking of malicous software now you have removed the offending scan they can now walk right in a sit right down. Dont make the Chinese hackers job easier.

You'll likely find that it's a problem with some hardware upline. Occasionally routers go down at ISP's or within Backbones, it will likely get fixed pretty expediently by the company that owns it or it will shut itself down and reroute connection through an auxiliary router.

Keep in mind that not every site goes through the same routing, so for you it might just affect sci. The 200+ pingers are not the greatest but that 2500+ ping with data loss in the first sample may be the root cause.

    I don't get this, but ....

Just a random thing that I never did understand. A friend mentioned it years ago, and it still seems to hold true.

We call it, simply, "The CNN Thing", and it's a quick means of testing your internet connection.

No, really, it's actually really simple:

If Sciforums or some other site you frequently visit is loading slowly, and the network seems generally unresponsive, then attempt to access CNN.com. If you have internet service, you will connect, and more quickly than to anything else, including search engines.

I don't know why it works. I don't know where all it works. I don't get it at all. But I've done this for nigh on a decade now, and it is unsettlingly reliable.

The last time I did it was in the winter; Comcast was doing some sort of infrastructure work in the neighborhood, and the net would just disappear now and then. If I had anything of a connection to work with, I could always bring up CNN.

That CNN trick is likely down to there Domain having 6 name servers (3 for cnn.com and 3 for www.cnn.com and 6 actual servers serving the cnn.com domain. (They obviously run a number of proxies to keep the sites uptime.)

Sciforums has 2 name servers and 1 actual server....
