View Full Version : avatars
spuriousmonkey 05-26-04, 02:53 AM A general message:
I know that most people are rather younger than me, but let me share some knowledge with you. We old people get confused rather easily and our memory is not what it used to be.
Could you please not change your avatars all the time. It kind of kills the function of the avatar as a recognition tool.
This is not a demand, just a request from an old fool. Feel free to disregard it.
CounslerCoffee 05-26-04, 04:12 AM I always leave my avatar the same, on every board that I've been a member. Of course, recently I lost my Rygel Avatar. I'll have to make it over again.
Dreamwalker 05-26-04, 04:17 AM I will try monkey.
Perhaps I should revert to my fool avatar but my
hard drive is so damn cluttered I do not know
where it is.
Logically Unsound 05-26-04, 04:19 AM what about if you have no avatar?
does that mean you think we dont exsist, if thats how you recognize people?
spuriousmonkey 05-26-04, 04:28 AM I can recognize you by the content of posts. You have a distinct style and mindset.
Also because many people have an avatar the people without one become special and can be indentified as those without one.
Logically Unsound 05-26-04, 04:30 AM fair 'nuff.
hehe i will now get an avatar to confuse everyone
*cackles insanley and goes to plot things*
CounslerCoffee 05-26-04, 04:32 AM I found my Rygel avatar. Isn't it cool? Geez, Farscape just kicks so much ass.
spuriousmonkey 05-26-04, 04:33 AM I have never even seen farscape CC.
Logically Unsound 05-26-04, 04:33 AM meh, not really.
heyhey CC. where have you been?
did you see all the wesness?
CounslerCoffee 05-26-04, 04:42 AM I saw all the Wesness. I have been here, just not posting and with the invisiblity feature on.
Spurious, watch it! You'll love it!
spuriousmonkey 05-26-04, 04:43 AM I don't have a TV. And I doubt it plays here.
Logically Unsound 05-26-04, 04:44 AM the first series = McRubbish
i never watched after that, but i was told it got better.
CounslerCoffee 05-26-04, 04:50 AM First seasons always suck, not matter what. It can only improve over time like a fine wine.
Spurious, I own one TV, no cable, and all I watch anymore are Farscape DVDs or movie rentals.
spuriousmonkey 05-26-04, 04:52 AM ah DVDs...the greatest invention since tea.
I like to watch TV shows on DVD actually. You can watch them whenever you want and no advertisments.
Logically Unsound 05-26-04, 04:52 AM phui YOUR logic is unsound.
how about the first season of any of the following:
- friends,
- fawlty towers
- star trek (yes, it true)
- star wars (not technically a series, but a film)
- stargate sg-1 (havent seen but gotta feeling its good)
- porridge
- only fools and horses
- the office
- others i dont know.
spuriousmonkey 05-26-04, 04:55 AM or the fourth season is the best!:
reference:
Blackadder fourth season
Logically Unsound 05-26-04, 04:57 AM hmmmmmmm as speaking from someone who knows that thing backwards i would say....... yes, but only cause of the wkd ending.
CounslerCoffee 05-26-04, 04:57 AM Okay, you got me with the British The Office. Damn. But SG1 is not good! It sucks more than Monica Lewenski, and that's a lot of suck.
Logically Unsound 05-26-04, 04:58 AM yeah but you suck as well.
sg-1 rules all, but i dont know about the first series, since as i said i havent seen it.
i was just guessing.
but im right about all the others.
spuriousmonkey 05-26-04, 04:59 AM Hei CC...i have to report a thread that has gone off topic to one of the moderators. Where can I do that?
Logically Unsound 05-26-04, 05:02 AM click report dont you?
ive never done it.
spuriousmonkey 05-26-04, 05:04 AM It was my hobby for a few days with PM, because I was not allowed to call him a fucking nazi cunt in public. Which I shall not do anymore.
Logically Unsound 05-26-04, 05:05 AM you had a hobby of reporting threads?
spuriousmonkey 05-26-04, 05:08 AM It only lasted for an hour...but still...a man needs a hobby. Fishing, drinking, and reporting threads.
Logically Unsound 05-26-04, 05:10 AM what about paper clip organizing?
spuriousmonkey 05-26-04, 05:12 AM don't know...sounds more like work to me.
Logically Unsound 05-26-04, 05:13 AM lol what do you do for a living?
how bout posting on forums?
spuriousmonkey 05-26-04, 05:14 AM Yes...how did you know?
Logically Unsound 05-26-04, 05:18 AM o lol didnt see that
well done.
30303030303030303030303030
To appease the mighty monkey god, I have found my permanent avatar (until something else takes my fancy)
My goat cancelled his holiday trip to appease the monkey
Dreamwalker 05-26-04, 06:12 AM Well, I suppose I´ll stay with this one right now.
I have one for Dreamwalker to use...I just made it like five minutes ago. If you want it you can have it
*sets avatar*
Dreamwalker 05-26-04, 06:44 AM Cooool Thanks I´ll gladly take it.
Twas only an experiment in making Animated Gifs...man they're easier to make than I thought...
Dreamwalker 05-26-04, 06:55 AM How did you do it? Which programm did you use?
I made 5 seperate images in Photoshop 7 and then put them into Serif Draw 6 (Animation mode) and put them in order and set the time delay between each. Simple
spuriousmonkey 05-26-04, 07:03 AM I use JASC for animation.
And make the frames in photoshop or illustrator.
Dreamwalker 05-26-04, 07:10 AM Hey spurious, It has a strange effect if you post your eye winking monkey avatar under goofyfish´s winking fish avatar.
Perhaps you should synchronise those two. :D
spuriousmonkey 05-26-04, 07:13 AM I made my blink delay quite longish so that only people with an attention span longer than 5 secs would notice it.
Dreamwalker 05-26-04, 07:21 AM Well, goofyfish´s animation is about 10 secs I suppose.
spuriousmonkey 05-26-04, 07:23 AM I could make mine 30 minutes?
Dreamwalker 05-26-04, 07:26 AM I do not think anyone would look that long at your monkey avatar, no matter how cute it is.
If you would build a supermodel that strips every 30 minutes, then perhaps. :D
spuriousmonkey 05-26-04, 07:34 AM If I could build a supermodel I would keep her for myself
http://sciforums.*******************/monkey_eye_movement.gif
Dreamwalker 05-26-04, 07:40 AM uuuuuuh, hypnotic. Please stop ...it.... my master....I´ll follow the......monkey!
Nooooo! don´t look at his eyes, they are evil!
That monkey is rather scary
won't be so scary if you needle his eyes out /evil sneer
spuriousmonkey 05-26-04, 08:59 AM You bastards! How could you mutilate an innocent monkey?
http://sciforums.*******************/monkey_eye_BLOOD.gif
Oh me like that one, me like that one good
Logically Unsound 05-26-04, 09:39 AM look, its a monkey, with 2 cherries bouncing up and down!!!
'wkd'
spuriousmonkey 05-26-04, 09:50 AM Oh me like that one, me like that one good
there you have it then.
I'm pissed off...I'm going home.
Dreamwalker 05-26-04, 10:01 AM Uhuuuu the monkey has lost his eyes!
Wicked, Invert Nexus gave me nice idea. CHAOS rules
Not very nice spurious. Please put them back in!
Dreamwalker 05-26-04, 05:19 PM I think I will put the avatar Thor created for me right about here:
http://www.sciforums.com/avatars/avatar14982_21.gif
invert_nexus 05-26-04, 05:47 PM I see it, and I have a suggestion to get past Hastein's paradox. Switch the letters so they don't come in order. In fact, make it at least two iterations and have the letters in a different order each time. You might even find a subpattern you can make. Order within chaos so to speak. Chaos theory does create some order, you know.
edit: Well, isn't that odd, I did see it, but now it's gone...
Dreamwalker 05-26-04, 05:49 PM It disappeared? Why?
Maybe the adress it had in the Avatar Database changed?
PORFIRY, I hope you're taking note of this thread! You know the reason. I feel like a dickhead.
Porfiry 05-27-04, 08:10 AM Dreamwalker, Teri tells me you should can your avatar. It makes her mad.
Dreamwalker 05-27-04, 08:10 AM Ok, OK. I´ll change it. Give me a few seconds.
......And it is done!
what's wrong with it? looks coolto me
or was it some avatar I didn't notice...
Dreamwalker 05-27-04, 08:18 AM Obviously someone cannot stand animated gifs with red lettering on black ground. :(
I also liked it *sniff*
Dreamwalker 05-27-04, 08:19 AM Just a question, would my former avatar be all right if I make it changing slower?
spuriousmonkey 05-27-04, 08:20 AM This one is nice too..
which brings us back to the original post in this thread:
Please don't change the avatar all the time (except when someone insists).
Porfiry, if you don't speak up, I'm going to tell on you! Everyone thinks I'm horrible.
spuriousmonkey 05-27-04, 09:15 AM I don't think so.
Dreamwalker 05-27-04, 09:18 AM I do not seem to understand?
Porfiry 05-27-04, 10:02 AM Animated avatars cause Teri to have epileptic seizures...
...actually she hates me because I made her get rid of her animated avatar. And because I'm actually pretty easy to hate. Teri on the other hand is easy to love, and so I hereby proclaim that everyone on sciforums does not think Teri to be horrible. If anyone dislikes Teri, it's off to Gitmo for them.
Dreamwalker 05-27-04, 10:04 AM Ok, I love teri sooo much, it´s unbelievable. :) There is no one I like more than teri!
Okay, I'll have to explain, and in doing so, feel very silly for being such a goody-two-shoes. (by the way I don't know if you've heard of that expression but it means basically being a good girl).
Porfiry sent me a PM asking me to change my avatar because it was too big and it was animated. As the obedient soul I am, I immediately proceeded to do so, even though that avatar took me roughly a year to work out how to make it and place in my profile, (I'm not computer savvy, so that avatar was a very big deal for me back then.)
HOWEVER, weeks have passed, and everyone -well a lot of you- have still got animated avatars, some of which are also big.
Now that I have deleted mine, I have no idea how to make a new one and stick it in my profile. So I'm miffed at Porfiry and jealous of everyone who still has an avatar. Any avatar, big, small, animated, not animated -turns my fingers green with envy.
That's the sorry tale of my avatar. I hope this reads okay, I basically just feel like an idiot with no avatar.
Cheers
Teri
Add a smiley face too if you like, I would have put one in if I had posted in the advanced mode.
Gee whiz, I spent all that time explaining, and there's a whole conversation going on!
Dreamwalker 05-27-04, 10:18 AM I understand. well, it took me about 10 minutes to make my former avatar with a programm Thor recommended me somewhere in this thread.
No big deal if I have to use a static one. (This one I have made with MS paint and it took my about 20 seconds :D)
Don´t be too envious, I still admire Spurious avatars myself because he´s quite skilled in making them ;)
Dreamwalker,
I think your 20 second one is very artistic. Maybe I'll have a look at that MSpaint thingy.
Cheers
Teri
Porfiry 05-27-04, 10:27 AM Our resident monkey is quite the artist. Maybe he'd consider making you an avatar, Teri. Whaddya say, spurious?
Actually, I was just thinking that we've rudely strayed from the thread topic that poor spurious has submitted.
I agree Spur, I remember the avatars more easily than the names. There was a stage a while ago where avatars were an obsession and everyone wanted to out-do each other. If I finally do put a new picture in, I promise I'll leave it alone.
Cheers.
Teri
Sorry to piss you off Teri. But our avatars are under the agreed avatar file size limit so WE ROCK!
Toodles
Ak, the avatars aren't animated anymore!!!!!! NOOO!!!
invert_nexus 05-27-04, 05:27 PM Yeah, they are. I've noticed sometimes the avatars don't animate. I've always ascribed it to the fact that I'm downloading at the same time, as it takes forever to load a page sometimes. Feels like I'm on dial-up.
Porfiry,
Is my avatar ok? I stole it from an old thread.
Dreamwalker 05-27-04, 05:35 PM I also changed mine back to the animated one.
But I made way slower than it originally was.
I hope that´s ok with you Porfiry and Teri?
invert_nexus 05-27-04, 06:00 PM You still fall victim to the Hastein paradox.
Dreamwalker 05-27-04, 06:07 PM Why? Don´t know what you mean. Is it about my new self-crafted avatar?
invert_nexus 05-27-04, 06:44 PM You said somewhere else that Hastein pointed out to you the paradox of having a series of letters spelling chaos. When those letters are coming in a certain order. I think that's what he told you anyway, I think I inferred some it from what I read.
Red Devil 05-28-04, 02:55 AM Do any of you see an avatar by my name? I do not, and was under the impression I did not have one anymore, since the makeover of the site. But I received an email a while back stating that my avatar was "too big" and could I make it smaller. What avatar? was my reply.
spuriousmonkey 05-28-04, 03:10 AM Do any of you see an avatar by my name? I do not, and was under the impression I did not have one anymore, since the makeover of the site. But I received an email a while back stating that my avatar was "too big" and could I make it smaller. What avatar? was my reply.
You have a red devil next to your name
it looks like this:
http://www.sciforums.com/avatars/avatar3766_0.gif
and it should be this size:
http://sciforums.*******************/avatar3766_0.gif
spuriousmonkey 05-28-04, 03:13 AM Actually, I was just thinking that we've rudely strayed from the thread topic that poor spurious has submitted.

Teri
Would you like me to make you something?
What did you use to have? What would you like to have?
Dreamwalker 05-28-04, 06:02 AM HEy Invert, you´re right, I remember now. Well who cares, if I make my avatar really chaotic, I am sure someone would get epileptic fits from it or would dislike it for another reason. I think I´ll just stick with this one if no one has a problem with it.
Dreamwalker, I think you've misunderstood me - I would love to have my animated avatar back and I envy you yours, but Porf made me delete it and I don't have a copy to put back. Daffy duck having a fit would be great - anyone know how to make that?
Cheerin'
Teri
Red Devil 05-28-04, 12:00 PM Not one single poster in here, has, on my screen, an avatar. This is the only forum where that is so, I belong to a couple of sports ones too. It happened months and months ago, when the site format was somehow amended, it came up on my screen as image free and stayed that way. I never gave it a moments thought and conrtinued posting thinking it was the same for all. Someone has amended the settings in my profile maybe??? naughty naughty!!
Strangely enough, that is what happened, but I did not do it? I have just been in profile for the first time in years and it was switched off???? OK my apologies to everyone, will amend size accordingly
jadedflower 05-28-04, 12:37 PM me likes mine
Spuriousmonkey,
After the Wes adventure, I have my avatar back. Yours, actually.
Thank you again.
<3
Dreamwalker 05-30-04, 03:36 PM Sargenlard, would you please change that avatar? It is not really very aesthetic. :p
i think lardy is trying to get his own fan club, but i dont think many ppl are gonna put that monstrosity as their avatar
The Flemster 06-10-04, 04:56 AM Where can I get avatars that will fit on Sciforums?
Every place I go to and find some really cool stuff, the pics are to large to go on here.
Help me, Obi-wan, you're my only hope...
The (has a shit avatar) Flemster.
MAke some yourself, that's what most of us do
The Flemster 06-10-04, 06:07 AM MAke some yourself, that's what most of us do
Yeah, thing is, I'm usually limited to 1-2 hours a day on the net.
I've tried having a bash at knocking up a GIF but I just don't really know what I'm doing.
It's a shame there's a limit on the ones we can attach, as I found some corkingly offensive and sick shit on the Interweb!!!
Oh well...
The Flemster.
Well then just shrink the ones you want to 40x40...
spuriousmonkey 06-10-04, 06:36 AM And if you can't shrink it yourself and us to do it for you.
Erm...no. Do you know how lazy I am? He can figure it out, he's a smart lad.
spuriousmonkey 06-10-04, 06:48 AM I like to make avatars for other people because I put subliminal messages in them.
I can't tell you what the message is exactly...it is classified.
That explains my weird hankering for blueberry muffins...
Dreamwalker 06-10-04, 06:55 AM Now I know why I am always looking for monkey-porn on the net.
Nope, that's just you *steps back*
Dreamwalker 06-10-04, 07:04 AM Ahhhh, can´t resist the urge.....Monkey-porn.... I love monkeys....
http://www.web-z.net/~climp/graphics/animations/tiere/sonstige/thumbnails/affe.jpg
Dreamwalker 06-11-04, 03:02 PM Aaaaarrrggh! Thor, you want to blind me?????? That avatar is gross.
Hey, I'm a Pirate, argh, you know and all that
Dreamwalker 06-11-04, 03:19 PM Yeah, and a really bright pirate you are.
I bet if you would fly that flag on your pirate flag, it would not scare others,
they will be blinded or dead, in case they laugh themself to death :D
I'm hoping playing 'In The Navy' the loudest it can go will help my cause a little.
Dreamwalker 06-11-04, 03:39 PM I suppose that depends on what your cause is :D
Too steal all the Hawaiin shirts from the seven seas...oh argh *waves*
Dreamwalker 06-11-04, 03:44 PM Yeah, you could be successful that way...fag... :p
Oh poo to you Mister Black and White!
Thor,
I'm sorry but I cannot work out what your avatar is - I like the colours but what is it?
invert_nexus 06-13-04, 03:42 AM Is it a green-eyed alien holding a pig? Looks like he's squeezing him pretty hard. Do you love your pig, Thor? :p
Dreamwalker 06-13-04, 03:53 AM Look at the 6000 Post thread, there he has posted a bigger picture.
But when you change your avatar, all previous posts change too.
Dreamwalker 06-13-04, 04:30 AM Not when you link a picture of your avatar in your post, like this:
http://www.sciforums.com/avatars/avatar14982_38.gif
Oh, okay.
Does anyone know what Thor's picture is?
Dreamwalker 06-13-04, 04:40 AM He told me what it is in the "6000 Post" thread in "About the members".
The robot that takes up most of the picture is GIR, the pig is just a pig.
Thanks a heap Dreamwalker. :bugeye: There's 30 minutes of my life I'll never get back - you could have at least told me what page is was on in a 21 page thread.
:D
Cheers
invert_nexus 06-13-04, 05:21 AM Heh heh, must have been really curious about it. :p I usually start from the end and work my way backwards in cases like that. Find any good stuff in there?
19 pages of drivel - I was trying to watch the X Files at the same time.
Cheers
Teri
I see my avatar has been getting some attention. Gir likes that.
Dreamwalker 06-13-04, 07:02 AM Sorry Teri, I assumed you would start at the end and just look for pictures in the posts, not reading all of them
Serves you right for assuming Dreamie, you should always give as much information as possible.
invert_nexus 06-13-04, 08:25 AM I see my avatar has been getting some attention. Gir likes that.
I wonder if your pig likes being held so tightly though. Looks like his eyes are about to shoot across the room. :p Hell, I guess so do Gir's eyes.
Dreamwalker 06-13-04, 04:39 PM Can you recognize my Jesus avatar?
jadedflower 06-13-04, 05:05 PM that's Jesus?
Looks like 2 legs, a mountain, a feather duster and a thumb cover thinggy for sewing....
or is my mind just twisted? :bugeye:
Dreamwalker 06-13-04, 05:09 PM My I ask on what kind of screen and resolution you are looking at this site?
jadedflower 06-13-04, 05:32 PM you may, but um.... I haven't a clue how to determine the answer...
Dreamwalker 06-13-04, 07:05 PM Doesn´t matter, changed it anyway. :D
The Flemster 06-14-04, 09:22 AM I like to make avatars for other people because I put subliminal messages in them.
I can't tell you what the message is exactly...it is classified.
Seriously, Spurio-- that'd be pretty cool if you could do that for me, man.
I have it on a floppy disc. How should I get it to you?
(I really am crap on computers!)
Cheers, dude!
The (hopefully getting a new avatar soon!) Flemster.
:)
spuriousmonkey 06-14-04, 09:27 AM email it as an attachment..
webmaster@spuriousmonkey.com
post a link to it if you can put it somewhere on the internet
The Flemster 06-16-04, 06:31 AM email it as an attachment..
webmaster@spuriousmonkey.com
post a link to it if you can put it somewhere on the internet
(If I knew how to do that...!)
I'll email it to you soon, my simian chum.
The Flemster.
wankerhill 06-16-04, 08:05 AM wow your thread has nothin to do with avatars...i dont like stargate SG1 its very boring...how do you get an avatar?
Dreamwalker 06-16-04, 08:16 AM At the top right corner of the site, you should find preferences. Click on it and then there should be an option on the left side that says "Change Avatar".
BMW-Guy 06-16-04, 03:12 PM bah! I can't find an image that I like that's actually small enough to fit as an avatar. My regular avatar is noty huge----just 70x70 (pixels).
why cant sciforums just let you put a normal sized avatar?
BTW:
Just curious: Sciforums is the first vbulliten forum I've ever seen advertising on. What's up with that? I don't mind the ads, I'm just curious.
