wht excatly is astrobiology??

They offer this as a course at the University of Texas at Arlington:

An interdisciplinary course involving topics in Geology, Astrophysics and Biology, including properties of life; origin and evolution of life on Earth; mass extinctions; extremophiles; introductory geophysics; possibility of life in solar system; stellar habitable zones;Fermi Paradox and the Drake Equation.

If you combine the terms, then sstrobiology would be the biology on a star. Since we don't expect to see much life on a star, the two were not intended to be run together. ;)

This course is the sort of thing I probably would have chosen if it had been available when I went to college; unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, there was nothing like that around in those days; so I went for environmental science. There are not many astrobiology jobs in the market, it has to be said.

maybe there are no jobs, but i would still love to study it,a combination of 2 of my favourite subjects...astronomy and biology

Cold war thing. Russians beat the Americans to space, remember? So the term 'cosmo' as in cosmonaut was automatically tainted, although it is ofcourse the more correct term, since no Appollo ever went to any star, but into space, the cosmos. Think they got carried away a bit in the 60's and 70's with naming a few of the newer disciplines in a similar silly fashion.

There are not many astrobiology jobs in the market, it has to be said.Many colleges will have an introductory astronomy course or an earth science one. That will combine meterology, oceanography, geology, and astronomy. The more they cover, the less detail they get into. My earth science course last summer was a blast; I really enjoyed it.
