Why do people turn their heads when they are confused or don't understand something? In fact I think most animals with a neck do it, at least I know dogs, cows, birds, and even some lizards. Is it instinct? And why do it? I've heard the theory that we are trying to hear or see better, but people do it even when there is nothing to see or hear.

Its a gesture of withdrawal...into concentration.

BTW, some cultures nod their head to say no.
