It has about 125 recipes and most sound delicious. I was wondering what types of smoothies I should focus on for good nutrition and to feel great?

Suggestions?

Hmm, I've always liked trying foods prepared differently than how I usually have them. I mean why do we eat any food combos? I like tomatoes, water and salt. I like raw tomatoes with salt on them and I like ketchup. I never have asked myself," Why don't I just eat the tomatoes, drink the water and lick a salt block for a while.:D

Anyway, I think the Smoothie is more a matter of convenience. For instance youre in hurry in the morning and can't take the time to clean fruit or don't want to take a bowl of food with you out the door. Have the smoothie pre-made and youre sweetly.

I like my smoothies with coconut water, and tropical fruits. I don't use milk, and I also add things like almonds, or wheat germ to thicken them up. It has tremendous health benefits as well as adding fiber and nutrients to your diet that you wouldn't usually have access to all year round. I keep bags of frozen fruits in my freezer (Most of which I cut up from when they are in season so there aren't preservatives) and toss them in instead of using crushed ice. I also don't add any additional sugars, so they are a great breakfast. You can also add vitamin boosters to your smoothies if there is something missing from your diet regularly.

It's a fantastic way to start your day.

Lets be honest, how many of you actually get five servings of fruit in a day along with all the fiber and a lot of the nutrients that come from having a well balanced breakfast?

As for smoothies, it's just a really healthy opportunity to get fruits you don't otherwise want to wash/peel/eat. Pomegranate is really good for you, but it takes forever to get the amount you can in a few ounces of pom juice.

stateofmind
06-02-09, 12:27 PM
I don't think there's any way you can make a "healthy" smoothie. As far as I've seen, it's a common thing in america to think that fruits are good for you. This really isn't true. Fruits should be a dessert if anything.

If you have any doubt about the healthfulness of fruits, try only eating them for a month and see how long you last.

95% water and the remaining 5% is sugar, a little bit of fiber and in some fruits Vitamin C and A. Don't trick yourself into thinking you're doing your body any favors by blending up some fruit in milk (and the milk is another story entirely.)

Liebling
06-02-09, 12:39 PM
? Do you have any scientific data to back up your assumptions?

Nothing you can eat is 100% balanced, and you need a balance of all things to be healthy. Fruits are one of those things. They have fiber and vitamins in them, as well as anti-oxidants and potassium. A homemade smoothie, with coconut water (not milk) and wheat germ and flax seed can be more beneficial in it's proteins, vitamins and electrolytes than most cereals.

Here's just one example (http://healthycooking.suite101.com/article.cfm/smoothie_savvy);

Orange Banana Yogurt Smoothie

Ingredients:

4 oz orange juice
4 oz non fat vanilla yogurt
1 banana
1 tablespoon wheat germ
Place all ingredients in blender. Blend until smooth, and serve in a tall glass.

1 serving

Nutrition Facts per serving: Calories: 254, Calories from Fat: 28, Total Fat: 3.1g, Saturated Fat: 1.4g Cholesterol: 7mg, Sodium: 82 mg, Total Carbohydrate: 50.2g, Dietary Fiber; 4.4g, Sugars: 32.5g, Protein: 10.1g

Did you know that the National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend 5 to 9 daily servings of fruits and vegetables? That's because eating plenty of fruits and vegetables has been shown to decrease a number of chronic diseases plaguing Anericans. If you haven't seen a fruit in weeks, let alone eaten one, start slow and build over time. Trying a smoothie is a terrific start. As intake of fruits and vegetables rises, people find that they just don't have room for quite so much junk food.

Your hostility towards me is not surprising. In a way I've rained on your smoothie parade which is probably something very enjoyable for you and something you've been told is healthy for you - which makes you feel good about yourself.

32.5g of sugar is a lot. The typical soft drink has about 40g per 8 oz serving (not much more.) Our bodies don't need sugar and the minuscule amounts of fiber from any given fruit doesn't even come close to compare to the fiber content of whole grains and vegetables - again fruits aren't necessary and should only be eaten minimally (a piece of fruit at the end of the day at most.)

The vanilla yogurt is dairy and consequently contains lactates. The human body after the age of 4 doesn't contain the enzymes to break down lactates and so any dairy items are harmful to our bodies - not to mention the high fat content most of them contain.

Liebling
06-02-09, 02:33 PM
I'm not hostile at all. And I am well informed about smoothies. The one I posted isn't one that I myself would drink. I don't use dairy products, as I know that the proteins and lactates they have in them are very hard for the human body to break down. I use coconut water in my smoothies, which has almost no fats what so ever, a very low sugar content and significant amounts of potassium. It's also the closest things we can get to a normal human electrolyte, therefore it's much easier for us to absorb into our system. The fiber content in both the wheat germ and the fruits is very good for my colon and my system in general as is the nutrients and anti-oxidants that the fruits and fiber provide. The crushed flax seed I use is also rich in omegas and very lot in fat. Wheat germ has fats, but only unsaturated fats in very small amounts. Also, wheat germ is known to be a fat burner.

Fruits are meant to be eaten more than one a day, so says every dietician and every medically available information you can find. The sugars in fruits aren't the same as the refined sugars from cane and corn that you are talking about, they are different things just like fats are different.

You need to do more research before you post. And that's not being hostile, that's stating a fact. Try reading some of the links I provided and then think about all the information they contain that comes from scientists and researchers in that area of expertise.

@ liebling: Have you ever tried Soy milk?

I like soy milk, but I don't like the refined sugars and flavours they add to most of them. I prefer coconut water for the potassium and add the wheat germ for proteins instead.

If I am adding matcha to my smoothie, I like to use soy because the soy balances out the bitter of the matcha and gives it a creamy consistancy. I've added blackstrap molasses to mine for the iron and calcium though and it adds a very nice flavour. Stevia tends to "cleanse" me in a way I don't prefer, but using a honey that is produced locally to your area is very good at combating and building up allergy immunities to your own community.

There is actually a great chart HERE (http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=faq&dbid=22) for gauging which foods and which nutrients are better for your system and easier to digest. They also have some great recipes for all things.

I am pretty sure he/she meant to have the ingredients in the right measurements prepared and you can just toss them into the blender and go. When I cut up fruits at their peak season, I put them into little baggies with the date on them in the freezer and then during the year I can just grab them and go. It's just convenient that way. There are smoothie mixes you can buy that boost smoothie fiber and nutrient content at the health food store too, but I try to avoid processed foods as often as possible. All those preservatives and chemicals can't be all that great for your body, since most of them are toxic in higher doses. I'm of the belief that just because your body can filter it, doesn't mean it was meant to do so. While it's not always possible or convenient to avoid those things, you can cut down on ingesting unnecessary chemicals by being aware of the contents of your food. If it's not listed, you can try asking.

You are right and wrong at the same time!

http://www.curezone.com/foods/sugarpage.asp

Sugars are generally the same, but refined sugars like corn syrup, and refined white sugar have been stripped of their benefits. Blackstrap Molasses for instance, has 13% of your daily iron, 18% of your daily manganese, 12% of your daily calcium and 14% of your daily copper.

Sugars should be weighed on their benefit to your body and not just on the idea that they are sugars. Meat needs sugar to help balance it out in your system, as well as helping proteins digest.

I don't touch chemical (artificial) sugar substitutes.

Watermelon is just fine in a smoothie and the water in it is fine if you don't use as much other liquid. And watermelon has 24% of your daily Vitamin C in it as well as vitamins A, B6 and B1. Not only that but watermelon is also a very concentrated source of the lycopene which is a carotenoid. Lycopene has been studied extensively in humans and animals and has been found to be protective against a growing list of cancers; prostate cancer, breast cancer, endometrial cancer, lung cancer and colorectal cancer.

Yes, I eat fruit occasionally - but I recognize it's an indulgence and not something I need.

Vegetables are necessary. They have many vitamins and minerals in them - although nightshade vegetables like tomatoes (more akin to a fruit), potatoes and eggplant I try to avoid because they contain large amounts of solanine and other alkaloids which are toxic.

Animal meat is high in fat and is not necessary in our diet. We can get just as much protein from beans, vegetables and whole grains without all those fats (and consequently a much lower calorie intake) - not to mention the hellish existence animals go through in a slaughter house.

A little off topic here......

Anybody make snow cones?

My youngest one got a snow cone machine from someone and I can't find the syrups you are supposed to use. Where the heck can you find that stuff?

and how are they doing?

and they are lying to you. There is no way I would ever believe someone could live on fruit alone.
Ok, maybe I shouldn't have stated that as if it was a fact.
She has some sort autoimmune disease, or at least she says so.
But to be honest I doubt if it's true as well.

Oh, you have not been introduced to the raw food diet and its offshoots:

I did this briefly, the raw food thing. That's when I discovered it's very hard to maintain your weight on this AND that my hips are so wide that even if I'm VERY thin, I can't fit into 00 pants.

You can purchase this stuff at most American Wal-Marts/Targets and maybe Canadian ones. If it's not available there, try making a simple syrup and adding flavor oils from a baking supplier.

I've heard of it. And I know they do veggies. I don't know of anyone who could survive on fruit alone cooked or raw.

Did you take vitamins?

I did, but you don't absorb them all very well. Protein is a real problem. Raw food isn't a terribly sensible idea. Then again, neither was doing 1000 crunches to look okay in a bikini this weekend. Living proof I don't really learn anything.

People that live on raw food diets are extremely unhealthy. They are often pale, emaciated and weak looking.
