what a bunch of loosers...instead of actually using the million dollar equipment for scientific purposes they are goofing off with beer.

Sometimes 10 minutes doing something fun can inspire thousands of new people to look at physics through new eyes.... If a few people are drawn in by the quirky beer idea, but then go off and start reading more about magnetic levitation, then I think it's worth it.

We also waited several weeks until there was a spare slot when the magnet was not being used for research (it must remain switched on 24 hours anyway because it takes so long to power down and power up)

Appreciate your reply though and it is a fair point.

Of, and there is one O in loser! You could argue I know the spelling because it is a term often applied to science geeks like me!

Fascinating to watch--I checked diamagnetism on wiki after watching the video through twice, and I see they've already levitated a frog (and probably other small animals) so obviously the strong magnetic fields don't seem to have much of a dangerous effect on living tissue. So when do we start levitating people, and what sort of magnetic field would you need to accomplish that feat? I guess that's already been worked out, on the assumption that you just need to scale up from the weight of a frog to work out the field-strength needed for the job.

    Thanks...

We've done quite afw things like this that you might like, across three video websites.

    Physics ones are at http://www.sixtysymbols.com/

Chemistry is at http://www.periodicvideos.com/ and general science at http://www.test-tube.org.uk/

if you liked the beer one, maybe you'd something even more surreal when we cut a block of butter with high powered lasers and waterjets... Not as scientific but really just to get people thinking about and aware of the technology that exists these days... Many of the laymen who watched this film did not even know what a waterjet was, so we were glad so many people viewed this...
