I think it was £60, but it did cover the entire first year Physics syllabus, so was well worth it. For $8539, I'd want the knowledge in the book to force itself off the page and into me.

For that much, I should be able to strap the textbook to my head for a few days and learn via osmosis!

Don't think I've paid more then $175 for a book (either an FEM or CFD book, can't remember which or the titles/authors), but combined, and excluding the books I downloaded via .pdf to save green, it's been roughly $1500 thhroughout college.

BUT DON'T BE ALARMED, COLLEGE NEWGOERS! You DO NOT need to buy all the "recommended" books, that'll rack up major bucks for crap you may never use. Only buy the recommended stuff if the class proves to be a problem class and you need the extra edge. Also, sell back anything you don't think you'll need in the future, you can get about half your book's value in return. If you're pinched for cash, sell everything if you have to, usually not a major hardship later on unless you're planning for a technical graduate degree later.

If you have a team of 5 guys all getting paid $100k/year to research something, then if the book can improve their efficiency by even 1% it would pay for itself pretty fast.

But if you're a college student looking to get out and make scratch, saving a buck on a book is kinda important too.

Depends on the personal choice and situation of course.

Most expensive science book you've bought?

    Jonathan Livingston Seagull

-I've spent most of my life, and life's fortune reproducing Jonathan's experiments (and I'd do it all over again).

Was it some sort of super-fancy hardcover edition or something? You can buy those in paperback for about $10 here.
