Sometimes when I'm listening to someone talk, there is a delay for a few seconds where the aural input just sounds like noise, before my brain decodes.

Anyone know why? Did too much Red Bull rape my brain's mechanisms?

That's how the brain works. Talking is just noise until the brain interprets it. Once I was listening to a friend for about a minute before I told him I heard his voice as a saxophone playing a melody and didn't "hear" a word he said.

I think so, I recognized I have had that experience too.

Anyone can happen to not be paying attention.

I don't hear anything, when someone starts talking I hear it immediately.

It's not that I don't pay attention. I do, but just hear undifferentiated noise for a few seconds.

I tested as academically gifted (though I'm lazy and don't always use it). Definitely not retarded.

So you were just messing? Fair enough, but can you please use a smiley to indicate that you're messing?

I just hear noise when people talk if I'm not really paying attention to them, but if all of the sudden I need to pay attention, I guess my brain interprets it later and I can understand what they said without them having to repeat. I heard it's why many if not most people will respond to something you said with "What?" first but then answer your question before you repeat it. This looks like garbled garbage, I need to rephrase. When I think of a better way to say what I'm saying.

Yes I was busting your chops and can't use the smiley on cracks like those. Those are the e-equivalent of saying that in person with a straight face.
Besides, if you see me make some sort of outlandish statement like that towards you, you can bet that it's facetious.

You should know me a little bit better than that by now. :bugeye:

    Anyway, to unhijack this thread,
No, I've never experienced the delay before. But I have experienced the hall/arena re verb hearing when I was tripping.

If it happens all the time then you're what we affectionately call "a little slow".
You're probably pretty bright and it's just a social thing, related to your autism, remember?

I am like that too. I cant concentrate in class either because of it. I end up just taking good notes and learning everything myself.

I am used to it though, so I usually just nod, and pretend like I hear what they say.

That's weird. I'll speculate that your brain isn't synchronizing sound with your other senses. That might turn out to be an advantage in reflex situations... i.e. you might sense changes in the environment before anyone else does. You should test the hypothesis.

    Anti, I am not autistic.

That's when you have no language and can't go to the loo by yourself because your fear of interacting is so extreme.

This happens to me (very rarely) when I don't have enough sleep.

Didn't they do a survey recently though and predict 1 in 5 people suffer a mild form of autism?

Anyway it's nothing to worry about VI, I get it too, just not all the time. Mostly when multiple things/noises are going on I take a few seconds to tune in to what I just heard.
