how do we delete a post (or a topic) we've created?

YOU cannot. Only moderators and administrators (ie. me) can do so. I believe that will change in the next version of this software.

we should be able to delete our own posts...

That functionality is scheduled to be included in the near future.

[DaveW]

You now CAN delete your own messages.

Simply click on the 'edit' icon above the message, and you will now see the option to delete your message.
