It is called escapism. Nowadays you can do it much cheaper (renting) but in the old times movies always did well in economic downturns...

 

You know times are tough when the people who still go to movies bring their popcorn.

 

At a theatre here, you get $0.25 refills on popcorn. I've seen people grabbing an empty bucket out of the trash container and getting that refill.

*Long life milk in liter boxes (almost all sold that way) is ~R$1.60 /L & gasoline is ~R$2.30/L (Milk < 70% cost of gas) Alcohol BTW is ~R$1.20/L and the lower cost fuel / mile you drive. (neither has economy over the other when alcohol cost 70% of gas price as there is less energy in the alcohol, but suprizingly, even with no change in the compression ratio, alcolol gives the car a few percent more horse power.

You know times are tough when car dealerships advertise that if you lose your job, you can bring the car back with no dent on your credit.

 

Let's make question of post 16 more general:

What is the gasoline to milk price ratio where you live?

Gas is more costly in good times (higher demand with not much more supply) so gas more expensive than milk is normal economy, I think. I would like to get some data on this ratio now for various countries.

In Brazil the G/M is just under 0.7 now.
