Why does Russia have so many orphans?

Martha: This is primarily due to social and economic poverty. Although there is an emerging ‘middle class’ the bulk of the people are operating on a subsistence living. Children are treasured, but to have more than one at home is unusual. Alcoholism contributes; prostitution (cost of birth control and abortion is percentage-wise much higher than in the US); Old Socialist ideas – that if a child is slightly ‘deformed’ it is best to put the child in an institution. There is also a stigma to adopting in Russia—it is done very seldomly.

Orleander, Russia is a big county. Yes it has orphans, just like any other country.
