Do you believe that the Earth's poles will shift, like Mayan calanders and other ancient mediums predict as well as some contemporary scientists?

This shit would be crazy if it happened, the Sun would no longer rise from the East. Severe climate changes would wipe out many civilizations and animal species all over the planet.

This is, of course, if you believe in the 2012 prophecies. The only thing we know for sure is the alignment of the Sun, Earth, and Supermassive black hole at the center of the Milkyway galaxy. Whether or not this will actually have an effect on our planet's magnetic field, we'll just have to wait.

Sorry if I posted this in the wrong forum.

can you cite exactly what will happen if the poles would shift and how the shift in magnetic poles would effect everything

Dude, the Sun will rise in exactly the same position, The East, it's just your compass that would be reading 'East' wrong. Compasses give a rough indication of North, but true North isn't magnetic North anyway.

Oh, and it's got nothing to do with Mayans. All of that has been discussed to death here, and their calendar runs out because of implicit limitations in their system, not because of some portent of doom, so please don't convolve disparate things, eh?

Also, as pole shift would be gradual, why would you expect a cataclysm?

Please list any contemporary scientists who predict this.

    1. With clock-like regularity, sudden reversals and pole shifts are natural to the Earth. The result is worldwide destruction, and is supported by paleo-magnetic evidence and early manuscripts.
    2. The reversal of the poles is attributed to the harmonic cycle of the magnetic fields of the sun.
    3. Polar reversals can be calculated precisely on the basis of the sunspot cycle theory or the magnetic field theory, which the Maya and the Old Egyptians were privy to. These secrets are contained in the Labyrinth of Hawara, a huge complex consisting of three thousand rooms.

Recent work by scientists and geologists Adam Maloof of Princeton University and Galen Halverson of Paul Sabatier University in Toulouse, France, indicates that Earth indeed rebalanced itself around 800 million years ago during the Precambrian time period.[8] They tested this idea by studying magnetic minerals in sedimentary rocks in a Norwegian archipelago. Using these minerals, Maloof and Halverson found that the north pole shifted more than 50 degrees — about the current distance between Alaska and the equator — in less than 20 million years. This reasoning is supported by a record of changes in sea level and ocean chemistry in the Norwegian sediments that could be explained by true polar wander, the team reports in the September–October 2006 issue of the Geological Society of America Bulletin.[9]

Research using GPS, conducted by Geoffrey Blewitt of the University of Nevada, has shown that normal seasonal changes in the distribution of ice and water cause minor movements of the poles.[10]

Well other than planes heading to new york going to Brazil instead the effects of the change will not really affect anything for too long. Because magnatism does not affect the weather. Also the changes historically happen every 10+ million years, the last one was around 2 million years ago.

Im not saying its a very popular theory but some scientists and philosophers believe that something will happen December 21, 2012. They have a very good show on the history channel about this, I forgot the title of it though. Shouldn't be too hard to find.

Meteorological patterns are relatively unaffected by magnetic fields. The Coriolis effect and the pressure gradient force would be the exact same...there would be almost no (if not 0) climate change as a result. One is dependent on rotation, the other on gravity.

Ha ha, yeah, it's a safe bet that something will happen on that date.

Obviously everyone here is confused about whether we're supposed to be talking about a magnetic pole shift (which happen every once in a while and don't really do anything other than make your compass point somewhere different) or a shift in the Earth's axis of rotation, which would probably be a major disaster (but will probably never happen).

well yeah, the magnetic poles shift a little bit every year, the 2012 prophecies are about a drastic shift, or even the north pole becoming the south pole and vise-versa.

That's what I interpret from those prophecies as well.
But that begs the question: What could cause such a quick and dramatic pole shift?

The poles have reversed many times before, and so far as anyone can tell the events weren't correlated with any mass extinctions or noticeable climate disruptions.

M*W: Reminds me of one of those historical markers on a bar in Houston that says, "In 1836 absolutely nothing happened on this spot."

    Google 'Earth Magnetic reversals'
This has happened many times throughout the history of the planet.
This will not affect anything other than compasses..and maybe bird migrations.

I have a prophecy....When nothing big happens on that date, people will find another dooms day date to look forward to.

CosmicTraveler: If you had read the first short paragraph at the link you provided, you would have realized that the author is a crackpot.

He claims the reversal of the magnetic poles will be caused by the reversal of the direction of rotation of the Earth. Utter nonsense !!!

Camilius: The History Channel is not a reliable source of valid information. Many of its programs are worthwhile, but there are a lot which seem to be designed solely for purposes of entertainment and/or the attracting of new viewers.

You have to use some judgment before accepting the views presented on that channel.
