Is there any press release or other information NASA offered with that photo?

I've just googled "driftwood" and "mars" and found this:
Driftwood and sailcloth are the engines of interplanetary travel, and the cause of much grief in the solar system. Wars are fought over driftwood groves and over sailmoth winderies.
Driftwood grows from the “prayer tree” that grows only in rocky areas. The tree receives its name from the shape of its branches, which often grow upwards and with the wind. Driftwood is known to grow in the Martian highlands, in the green zone of the asteroid belt, and in the death valleys of Mercury. There are a few rare groves on the highest snowy peaks of Earth.
From http://www.godsmonsters.com/?ART=63
That explains it then.
I don't know who writes this stuff , but it is well written.
"Sailmoth Winderies " I like that. That's nice.

That's just a part of the landing device that broke up when the lander arrived on Mars.

Its more than likely a geologic feature rather than a piece of the lander itself (although this is possible). There are some other, simularly fractured rocks in the region.
More interesting is the snowman sitting by a campfire on the horizon.

Why everyone knows that you should always use good wooden crate when packing any large items that are going to be moved!;)

Notice the link: it is from the official website. I don't know why Nasa would photoshop driftwood and a snowman into their official pics.

Some theists believe that it's a piece of wood from a Martian Noah's Ark.
Some biologists are hoping that it's an unknown alien species of plank-ton.

Dude, the Chinese have been known to use Oak as heat shielding or their re-entry vehicles! Works quite well, so I understand!
I don't think anyone else uses wood though.

I concur.
People also mistook a mountain on Mars for a human face.

Is it just me, or can anyone else see a Martian in the distance?
It looks like a piece of wood from the Ark........
