View Full Version : I am a contestant in N-Prize competition
I am a registered contestant in the N-Prize Competition. :)
The Competition was started by UK professor and the purpose of the competition is to design a spacecraft that can travel to an altitude minimum of 100km and orbit Earth 9 times or more, in addition to that the whole project must be within 2000 pound sterling budget.
I already have some parts of the project purchased and will starts purchasing the later parts during winter. The rocket I am designing will be liquid fueled and based on rockoon concept, where the rocket will ignite from the balloon that has ascended x number of feet. The propulsion I will be using is hydrogen peroxide.

Cool... Good luck :)
You have to pay for all the materials yourself?

yeah I do...I am trying to find a buddy I can join with design of the rocket nozzle. But that is in the future. Here is the site by the way: http://www.n-prize.com/

How are you going to come up with the money? I thought you were broke.
How are you going to come up with the money? I thought you were broke.
Well...I am broke in between intervals...hehehe :p
But I got the money issue figured out.
Shorty, every day I think of a way to engineer this thing...I am so excited.

I see that they encourage the use of chewing gum. May I suggest Stride it's the gum
that lasts. LOL

It's in the rules....didn't you read it? lol
Imaginative use of string and chewing gum is encouraged. Entrants are responsible for everything, organisers are responsible for nothing.

Wouldn't Orbit Gum be a better choice?

heh? :bugeye: chewing gum is encouraged? riiiiiiight...

just because its name is "Orbit" does not mean it has anything to do with space

HAHA!!
Draqon it was right in the rules of the site you posted. I suggest you take another look.
I suggest you try to use condoms and tampons.....LOL

as funny as that sounds the extreme thinness of a condom nowdays means it can inflate to large volumes, so having nitrogen gas in it and using it as balloon is a good idea to try. hehehe

Maybe we should be partners, I am pretty creative ya know. :D I also have a whole pack here never used but expired. LOL

can you do welding? I need a rocket nozzle from steel. :p

Last time I welded was back in middle school, when I made some candle holders.
I can sew good though...:p
lol shorty, your sewing skills clearly fit in for the rocket engineering...

Listen here I just helped my son make a boat with minimal materials from a list that would float with 100 marbles in it. He said it was a success but most kids boats sank. lol
yeah thats a marvel in marine engineering...

She also has great gum chewing skills.
Plus, they value creativity. If you could sew a satellite that would score high points.
Plus you could sew the baloon together (and seal the seams with Orbit gum).
one_raven you should do that.

I have much more important things to do.
In fact, I should be doing them now.
well than do them, One_raven. it's night time, and time to do the duty.

It IS what you meant, actually.
I am trying to start a web based business before the company I work for goes under or I get laid off in this mess of a market and I haven't done web developing in about 5 or 6 years, I can't afford to hire someone for it and I haven't been able to find a partner so I need a helpful tool.
I already know what the business is going to be, how it will work, the URL name (though I haven't reserved it yet) and a rough idea of the database structure.
I just need to build it now, and worry about where the advertizing budget will come from, since I was told none of us will be getting bonuses or raises this year.

:wtf:
Hydrogen peroxide propulsion? ......... if that wasn't mammothly inane balderdashery enough, please consider; you might also require rocket fuel!, as H2O2 is merely an oxidising agent. Go try petrol or something.
p.s; Please take great care, this is savagely dangerous stuff for a supreme idiot to be toying around with.
well if I am a supreme idiot, would you be happy the world is rid of an idiot? so you got nothing to worry about. hydrogen peroxide is the safest propellant possible.

Sure, H2O2 on its own will be spectacularly safe, as your shockingly cretinoid rocket engine will just pump out liquid.

Cryogenically cool offer, bozoid - must instantly eat 27 chicken phal curries (no rice) and contract cholera ..... be seeing you, real soon.
:)
who are you?
no I will not disclose what catalyzer I will be using with hydrogen peroxide motor.
So if you don't win you just lost 2000 pounds ? What are the odds ?
Enmos, to me I did not loose 2000 pounds, if I lost or won, I did something I want to do, something I was born to do.

Sure.. but what are the odds of winning ? How many contestants are there ?
currently 13 contestants, in future will be more. If noone gets the task done, noone wins.

14....since you don't want my help I will enter it myself. :D
How can you prove that an object weighing less than 100 grams is in orbit?
How would you even get DoD clearance to do it? As far as any world defense agency would be concerned, it's space garbage and only serves to damage satellites.

well first I need FAA clearance to fly anything bigger than 6kg of payload, in addition to that yes I need clearance for use of the rocket engine with that much fuel...for which I need another person who has such clearance to join my team. :p There are currently two ways I have an idea of confirming that the satellite has indeed reached the 100km altitude:
1 way) a long-range transceiver (currently I found one that works for 90 km! and costs as lil as 180$) transmits data with pictures from microcontroller
2 way) the thing enter atmosphere burns up some of its components, data flash disk survives the descent (after parachute opens) and a small radiosonde turns on telling of its location....
the problem in both ways is power consumption needs...

Silver mesh?
Would be cool to have a small camera in the nose of your rocket. dont know how you would ever view what was captured though.

100Km is the minimum Perigree to achieve orbital flight anyway, isn't it?
The budget sounds far too small. You do know, that so far, only a few amateur rockets have so far breached the 100Km limit? That teams of amateur rocketeers are actively working on designs to do achieve orbit, and so far, they have all only managed sub-orbital flights? I bet they blew that budget on R&D years ago.
