cultures of rat hepatocyte monolayers
Haruhiro Muratsubaki*, Nozomi Yajima, Hitomi Yoneda, Keiichiro Enomoto
and Toshiharu Tezuka
Department of Clinical Biochemistry, School of Health Sciences, Kyorin University, Hachioji, Tokyo, Japan

my problem is i cant work out which is the first name and which the surname because harvard referencing requires i just put the surname and an inital

Hitomi is the most popular given name in that list, and as one_raven says, it comes first.
Keiichiro, Haruhiro, and Toshiharu look like given names. Yajima looks like a family name. Finally, Tezuka is a famous family name.

And finally, other people have come to the same conclusion:

If the article was in English, I think you can safely assume that the first names first for any names, not only Japanese.

The given names are listed first. I recognize a few of those surnames, which are listed second.

We always write Chinese and Korean names in their original form, but for some reason we reverse Japanese names.
