Could you assist me with French? In French what is the difference between les Wé and les wès?I think they're just struggling to transcribe the name of an African people in the French alphabet. A hundred years ago they would have called them les Oué. The inconsistency over the plural S is simply an expression of a genuine academic indecision over how to form the plural of the name of a foreign people. We have the same problem in English:The Greeks, the Russians, the Mohawks The French, the Chinese, the Sioux.
