It supposed to come out at the same time as Vista SP2, which is kind of stupid.
Also, do we need a new OS in every 2 years???

That kind of pisses me off.
"do we need a new OS in every 2 years?"
There are many issues here. Initially i would say no. Then we have to face the reality of competition amongst OS's, keeping programmers busy, keeping hardware manufacturers happy and to a lesser extent software developers.
Considering all that then i can understand the "need" for completely "new" OS's. Then there is also the consideration that you dont have to upgrade but of course new programs eventually will not work.
Now if we were to look at this from the OS developer side we would see that they are working every day on upgrading their OS. Evidently they feel that a "new" name is warranted.
One thing i would consider to be an alternative is to charge for service packs. There obviously is a nedd fo service packs but major OS changes with new name etc. seem to be warranted but every five years.

Why should I care as a consumer programmer being employed??? If they release Windows 7 two years after Vista, that means:
1. Vista was crap to start with.
2. One could have waited 2 yours and leave out Vista, making the jump from XP to W 7...
The new name is a marketing gimmick. There isn't as much new stuff in every 2 years. Hell we had only 7 Windows in how many years? 24???

Have you seen the screenshots? (http://windows7news.com/2008/10/28/official-windows-7-m3-screenshots/). It is almost identical to vista, I wonder what's underneath...

From what I understand, Windows 7 is supposed to be a completely different OS, that's supposed to be UNIX based. I'm not sure if this is true or not.

Probably 30 apps running behind the scene taking up more processing power!:(
This line from a DailyTech article on W7 is promising: "As to those hoping for a lighter build, it looks like your dreams may come true. Windows 7 Chief Steve Sinofsky held up his "personal" laptop during the demo. It was running Windows 7 flawlessly on a 1 GHz processor netbook (probably using a VIA processor) with only 1 GB of RAM. It was running very smoothly, with over half the RAM free to use."

Hopefully it'll stay that way by launch.

Oh don't worry. They'll bloat it up bigger than Rosie O'donnell at a free dinner buffet in Vegas.

no, but microsoft does.
i'll have to admit that win95 through winME were POS.
then came windows NT, a fairly robust OS.
windows XP is essentially NT with patches and upgrades.
microsoft doesn't make money from patches and upgrades so they repackage and relabel the NT software into stuff like windows 2000 and windows XP.
the only major difference between win2000 and XP is that win2000 can read and write to a FAT32 filing system whereas XP can't.

yeah, my mistake.
i meant to say that 2000 can be used on a fat32 or NTFS partition.

Correct.
I'm actually running Windows 7 on an old computer I use for experiments. Seems to be OK right now... of course.. I had to grab all sorts of VMWare drivers...

no, but microsoft does.
Not necesserily. Since computer makers putting a Windows system on new computers anyway, for MS it doesn't matter if it is XP or W 7, as long as they get the licence fees. Sure for a new system they can charge more, but a new thing is always scary, can cause troubles, etc. Not always worths the change...

Are you a beta tester? Where'd you get it? I wouldn't mind 'experimenting' myself too.

No.
Oooh.. it's around.
Just do some searching....
:-)
From what i understand: Windows 7 will have winmin the new kernel of Windows Vista OS. The componentization of OS was a big step forward for microsoft; that would allow faster upgrades and updates to OS.
