View Full Version : Lacie Network Space + Linux = ?
I've started to run out of storage again, so I want to buy an external hard drive, but because I use at least 2 computers, I'm eyeing Lacie Network Space 750GB drive.

The problem is that I need to share that storage among Linux and Windows pcs, but I don't know if Lacie Network Space is compatible with Linux.
So maybe you know, can I hook up LNS with Linux over ethernet?

If it's FTP Accessible I don't see why not. I am sure in either case the connection is going to be a Network drive. So...Folder at 192.168.1.x You may need potentially Windows Compatibility Network Sharing like... SMBA, which is practically standard in most Linux distros. I assume the software that comes standard is just going to set up a convenient way to install a network folder for Laymen.
The link you provide doesn't seem to imply it has some form of Flash Rom on the Network drive, if it does...it's a one time Windows needed install. Unless you're very proficient.
Well, I don't want to use it over FTP - I'd like to play music directly from it,
but I get, what you said, haven't used SAMBA.

Just so you know; .FTP Drives are accessible as easily as .NET (I think thats the extension..I forget). When it's a network file; you simply put the link in your Network Connections bar on the tool bar...click it and it mounts. Once it's mounted, you can then add the files to the Media Library. When unmounted the files are inaccessible from the Library...you simply mount the list and immediately the files are in the library.
This is going to be the true for nearly all cases with Linux; it's just the standard nature of the platform. What distro do you use?
Thanks for the info.
I use Mandriva since 2001. :D
