View Full Version : Brilliant Lyrics
Alright, I'm surprised there hasn't been any threads for this yet (maybe there has, frankly I don't know) but this thread is for you guys (and me) to post some brilliant song lyrics. Whether they be political, social, emotional or just lyrics that really touch you in some way. I'd like to start off with a few! (I'm putting lyrics in red to make it read easier, and because of hte gang war)
----------------------------------------------------------------------
One is the lonliest number
That you'll ever do
Two can be as bad as one
It's the lonliest number since the number one
No is the saddest experience you'll ever know
Yes, it's the saddest experience you'll ever know
Cause one is the loneliest that you'll ever know
One is the loneliest number even worse than two.
It's just no good anymore
Since you went away
Now I spend my time just makin' rhymes of yesterday
One is the loneliest number
One is the loneliest number
One is the loneliest number
Since you went away
Since you went away
One is the loneliest number
One is the loneliest number
One is the loneliest number
Since you went away
It's just no good anymore
Since you went away
Now I spend my time just makin' rhymes of yesterday
One is the loneliest number
One is the loneliest number
One is the loneliest number since you went away...
- One, H. Nillson
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I really doubt these lyrics are that intelligent but hearing the songs just touchs me in a very special way.

When I wake up early in the morning
Lift my head, I'm still yawning
When I'm in the middle of a dream
Stay in bed, float up stream (float up stream)
Please, don't wake me, no, don't shake me
Leave me where I am - I'm only sleeping
Everybody seems to think I'm lazy
I don't mind, I think they're crazy
Running everywhere at such a speed
Till they find there's no need (there's no need)
Please, don't spoil my day, I'm miles away
And after all I'm only sleeping
Keeping an eye on the world going by my window
Taking my time
Lying there and staring at the ceiling
Waiting for a sleepy feeling...
Please, don't spoil my day, I'm miles away
And after all I'm only sleeping
Keeping an eye on the world going by my window
Taking my time
When I wake up early in the morning
Lift my head, I'm still yawning
When I'm in the middle of a dream
Stay in bed, float up stream (float up stream)
Please, don't wake me, no, don't shake me
Leave me where I am - I'm only sleeping
- I'm Only Sleeping, John Lennon/Paul McCartney
------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is me. Hands down. I cant fall asleep until like 5 in the morning, which means I NEED to sleep in!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day after day alone on the hill,
The man with the foolish grin is keeping perfectly still,
But nobody wants to know him,
They can see that he's just a fool,
And he never gives an answer,
But the fool on the hill
Sees the sun going down,
And the eyes in his head,
See the world spinning around.
Well on his way his head in a cloud,
The man of a thousand voices talking percetly loud
But nobody ever hears him,
Or the sound he appears to make,
And he never seems to notice,
But the fool on the hill . . .
Nobody seems to like him
They can tell what he wants to do.
And he never shows his feelings,
But the fool on the hill . . .
- Fool on the Hill, Paul McCartney/John Lennon
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I once posted a thread stating my belief that the fool was Nelson. After re-reading hte lyrics and listening to the song, I've decided the fool is me.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Oh yeah, all right
Are you going to be in my dreams
Tonight?
And in the end
The love you take
Is equal to the love you make
- The End, John Lennon/PaulMcCartney/George Harrison
------------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't think any band has had better final words. I think these words as their final song together make the story complete. Can anyone think of a better ending?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please allow me to introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
I've been around for a long, long year
Stole many a man's soul and faith
And I was 'round when Jesus Christ
Had his moment of doubt and pain
Made damn sure that Pilate
Washed his hands and sealed his fate
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name
But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game
I stuck around St. Petersberg
When I saw it was a time for a change
Killed the Czar and his ministers
Anastasia screamed in vain
I rode a tank
Held a general's rank
When the Blitzkrieg raged
And the bodies stank
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name, oh yeah
What's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah
I watched with glee
While your kings and queens
Fought for ten decades
For the Gods they made
I shouted out
"Who killed the Kennedys?"
When after all
It was you and me
Let me please introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
And I laid traps for troubadors
Who get killed before they reached Bombay
(Bombay is the word I found listed on all of the lyrics pages I found, but the actual lyric on the soundtrack sounds as if it has more syllables than that, to me - DA)
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah
But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah, get down, baby
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah
But what's confusing you
Is just the nature of my game
Just as every cop is a criminal
And all the sinners saints
As heads is tails
Just call me Lucifer
'Cause I'm in need of some restraint
So if you meet me
Have some courtesy
Have some sympathy, and some taste
Use all your well-learned politesse
Or I'll lay your soul to waste, um yeah
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, um yeah
But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, um baby, get down
Woo, who
Oh yeah, get on down
Oh yeah
Oh yeah!
Tell me baby, what's my name
Tell me honey, baby guess my name
Tell me baby, what's my name
I tell you one time, you're to blame
- Sympathy For the Devil, Rolling Stones
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
These lyrics are just so perfect. As far as I'm concerned this song is brilliant. They capture everything I've ever idolized (er......haha) about the devil. They capture every idea that popular culture could demand. I love it.
Now, I could go on for about as many songs as The Beatles wrote, but........ your turn!

Well, my favourite lyrics are all by METALLICA!!!
The next song is about war and since I'm really interested in wars (I don't love wars, don't get me wrong here) I love it very much and when I listen to it, with the heavy guitars and the solo I really can imagine a battlefield...
DISPOSABLE HEROES
Bodies fill the fields I see, hungry heroes end
No one to play soldier now, no one to pretend
running blind through killing fields, bred to kill them all
Victim of what said should be
a servant `til I fall
Soldier boy, made of clay
now an empty shell
twenty one, only son
but he served us well
Bred to kill, not to care
just do as we say
finished here, Greeting Death
he's yours to take away
Back to the front
you will do what I say, when I say
Back to the front
you will die when I say, you must die
Back to the front
you coward
you servant
you blindman
Barking of machinegun fire, does nothing to me now
sounding of the clock that ticks, get used to it somehow
More a man, more stripes you bare, glory seeker trends
bodies fill the fields I see
the slaughter never ends
Why, Am I dying?
Kill, have no fear
Lie, live off lying
Hell, Hell is here
I was born for dying
Life planned out before my birth, nothing could I say
had no chance to see myself, moulded day by day
Looking back I realize, nothing have I done
left to die with only friend
Alone I clench my gun
Back to the front.
Now comes Master of Puppets, my favourite Metallica song ever.
It's about drugs. It's social, I guess...
End of passion play, crumbling away
I'm your source of self-destruction
Veins that pump with fear, sucking darkest clear
Leading on your deaths construction
Taste me you will see
more is all you need
you're dedicated to
how I'm killing you
Come crawling faster
obey your Master
your life burns faster
obey your Master
Master
Master of Puppets I'm pulling your strings
twisting your mind and smashing your dreams
Blinded by me, you can't see a thing
Just call my name, `cause I'll hear you scream
Master
Master
Just call my name, `cause I'll hear you scream
Master
Master
Needlework the way, never you betray
life of death becoming clearer
Pain monopoly, ritual misery
chop your breakfast on a mirror
Taste me you will see
more is all you need
you're dedicated to
how I'm killing you
Come crawling faster
obey your Master
your life burns faster
obey your Master
Master
Master of Puppets I'm pulling your strings
twisting your mind and smashing your dreams
Blinded by me, you can't see a thing
Just call my name, `cause I'll hear you scream
Master
Master
Just call my name, `cause I'll hear you scream
Master
Master
Master, Master, Where's the dreams that I've been after?
Master, Master, You promised only lies
Laughter, Laughter, All I hear and see is laughter
Laughter, Laughter, laughing at my cries
Hell is worth all that, natural habitat
just a rhyme without a reason
Neverending maze, drift on numbered days
now your life is out of season
Come crawling faster
obey your Master
your life burns faster
obey your Master
Master
Master of Puppets I'm pulling your strings
twisting your mind and smashing your dreams
Blinded by me, you can't see a thing
Just call my name, `cause I'll hear you scream
Master
Master
Just call my name, `cause I'll hear you scream
Master
Master
I'm not sure what the next one is about, but it just makes me ponder about things. It's called No Leaf Clover (also by Metallica).
Can he feel it's bright this time?
On his crash course we're the main time
He's admired to the distant thunder
Duty fills his head with wonder
Says it feels bright this time
Turned around and found the bright light
Good day to be alive, sir
Good day to be alive he says, yeah
And it comes to be
That the soothing light at the end of your tunnel
Is just a freight train coming your way
And it comes to be
That the soothing light at the end of your tunnel
Is just a freight train coming your way
Don't it feel alright like this?
All the things respond to his wish
Suffer for that great reward, for
Suffer for that great reward he said, yeah
And it comes to be
That the soothing light at the end of your tunnel
Was just a freight train coming your way
And it comes to be
That the soothing light at the end of your tunnel
Is just a freight train coming your way
It's coming your way
It's coming your way, yeah, yeah
Oh yeah, here comes.
Yeah,
And it comes to be
That the soothing light at the end of your tunnel
Is just a freight train coming your way
The Man Of La Mancha
Hear me now, Oh, thou bleak and unbearable world
Thou art base and debauched as can be
And a knight with his banners all bravely unfurled
Now hurls down his gauntlet to thee!
I am I, Don Quixote, the Lord of La Mancha
My destiny calls and I go
And the wild winds of fortune shall carry me onward
Oh, withersoever they blow
Withersoever they blow
Onward to glory I go
[instrumental break]
Hear me heathens and wizards and serpents of sin
All your dastardly doings are past
For a holy endeavor is now to begin
And virtue shall triumph at last.
I am I, Don Quixote, the Lord of La Mancha.
A name all the world soon will know
I commend all my soul to the wild winds of fortune
Oh withersoever they blow
Withersoever they blow
Onward to glory I go!
=======================================
The Impossible Dream (The Quest)
To dream the impossible dream
To fight the unbeatable foe
To bear with unbearable sorrow
To run where the brave dare not go.
To right the unrightable wrong
To be better far than you are
To try when your arms are too weary
To reach the unreachable star
This is my quest, to follow that star,
No matter how hopeless, no matter how far
To be willing to give when there's no more to give
To be willing to die so that honor and justice may live
And I know if I'll only be true to this glorious quest
That my heart will lie peaceful and calm when I'm laid to my rest
And the world will be better for this
That one man scorned and covered with scars
Still strove with his last ounce of courage
To reach the unreachable star.

Jay Farrar is probably the best lyricist I've ran into so far in my life. Here's a couple of tastes. You may need to be from the American Midwest to truly appreciate the second one.

Medicine Hat
::::::::::::
There will be droughts and days inundated
unveilings free from saturation
departures raised with no masquerading.
There will be teachers that die by their own hand
pundits that push headlong for atonement
friends and followers devoted to living.
There will be watchers that plot from in confines
and those committed to society's circles
unwary cogs with no cadence or virtue.
There will be right, there will be wrong.
Drop of the hat and it's already started
Just like that and the deed is done
What I'd give for the hat to be medicine
The time is now to be on the run.
There will be machinations unforeseen
sleepwalking sense from a bad dream
no promenade walk in the parkway.
There will be catchwords filled with infection
circulars to prop up occasion
a golden mean to guide the footsteps.
There will be levels on high hills that appraise
there will be unchanging certainties
barometers that follow the stampede.
There will be right, there will be wrong.
Drop of the hat and it's already started
Just like that and the deed is done
What I'd give for the hat to be medicine
The time is now to be on the run.
There will be signposts of indication
semaphore ghost signs and warnings
hailstone halos and country-blues wailings.
There will be strains that break out of straight time
but paid with grace, taking roads to the same place
with consequence to repay what's been given.
There will be layers of means to an end
drawn-out days before resolution
dregs will rain down from all directions.
There will be right, there will be wrong.
Drop of the hat and it's already started
Just like that and the deed is done
What I'd give for the hat to be medicine
The time is now to be on the run.
::Windfall::
Now and then it keeps you running
It never seems to die
The trail's spent with fear
Not enough living on the outside
Never seem to get far enough
Staying in between the lines
Hold on to what you can
Waiting for the end
Not knowing when
May the wind take your troubles away
May the wind take your troubles away
Both feet on the floor, two hands on the wheel,
May the wind take your troubles away
Trying to make it far enough, to the next time zone
Few and far between past the midnight hour
Never feel alone, you're really not alone...
Switching it over to AM
Searching for a truer sound
Can't recall the call letters
Steel guitar and settle down
Catching an all-night station somewhere in Louisiana
It sounds like 1963, but for now it sounds like heaven
May the wind take your troubles away
May the wind take your troubles away
Both feet on the floor, two hands on the wheel,
May the wind take your troubles away.
Chuck schulinder of Death wrote a lot of brilliant lyrics RIP
Born into darkness
Where sounds portay the images that are out
Out of reach from my sight
Which has been denied
Hands change into my eyes
Body senses intensified
Sight so close yet far away
In dreams my thoughts take their form
To give memories identify
Through dreams I obtain
The ability to connect sight with sound
Close your eyes and imagine to be without
What we take for granted every time we open eyes
A permanent shadow to never step away
Feel the dark in the cold
Feel the warmth of the light
Which has been denied
Hands change into my eyes
Body senses intensified
Sight so close yet far away
In dreams my thoughts take their form
To give memories identify
Through dreams I obtain
The ability to connect sight with sound
Suicide Machine
Controlling their lives
Deciding when and how they will die
A victim of someone else's choice
The ones who suffer have no voice
Manipulating destiny
When it comes to living, no one seems to care
But when it comes to wanting out
Those with power, will be there
Prolong the pain
How long will it last?
Suicide machine
A request to die with dignity
Is that too much to ask?
Suicide machine
How easy it is to deny the pain
Of someone else's suffering
Robbed of natural abilities
In death they now seek tranquility
In a confused state of mind
Extending agony, they must be blind
Manipulating destiny
When it comes to living, no one seems to care
But when it comes to wanting out
Those with power, will be there
Prolong the pain
How long will it last?
Suicide machine
A request to die with dignity
Is that too much to ask?
Suicide machine

Hey you !
Hey you !
Out there in the cold
Getting lonely, getting old, can you feel me
Hey you !
Standing in the aisles
With itchy feet and fading smiles, can you feel me
Hey you ! don't help them to bury the light
Don't give in without a fight.
Hey you !
Out there on your own
sitting naked by the phone would you touch me
Hey you !
With your ear against the wall
Waiting for someone to call out would you touch me
Hey you !
Would you help me to carry the stone
Open your heart, I'm coming home
But it was only a fantasy
The wall was too high as you can see
No matter how he tried he could not break free
And the worms ate into his brain.
Hey you !
Out there on the road
Doing what you're told, can you help me
Hey you ! out there beyond the wall
Breaking bottles in the hall, can you help me
Hey you ! don't tell me there's no hope at all
Together we stand, divided we fall.
- lyrics by Roger Waters
Comfortably numb
Hello,
Is there anybody in there
Just nod if you can hear me
Is there anyone at home
Come on now
I hear you're feeling down
I can ease your pain
And get you on your feet again
Relax
I'll need some information first
Just the basic facts
Can you show me where it hurts
There is no pain, you are receding
A distant ship smoke on the horizon
You are coming through in waves
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying
When I was a child I had a fever
My hands felt just like two balloons
Now I've got that feeling once again
I can't explain, you would not understand
This is not how I am
I have become comfortably numb
O.K.
Just a little pin prick
There'll be no more aaaaaaaah!
But you may feel a little sick
Can you stand up?
I do believe it's working, good
That'll keep you going through the show
Come on it's time to go.
There is no pain you are receding
A distant ship smoke on the horizon
You are only coming through in waves
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying
When I was a child
I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye
I turned to look but it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now
The child is grown
The dream is gone
And I have become
Comfortably numb.
- lyrics by David Gilmour
Goodbye cruel world
Goodbye cruel world
I'm leaving you today
Goodbye
Goodbye
Goodbye
Goodbye all you people
There's nothing you can say
To make me change
My mind
Goodbye.
- lyrics by Roger Waters

I've become somewhat obsessed with this song. I cannot figure it the hell out!
Vera Blue by Chemlab:
It's 3:30am... all the streets are a blur
Heading for a wreck at the end of the world
You can tell she's hydraulic
A silver scream in super sonic
You can see the mercury smear in her eye
Right out of this world
And she's lost in the swirl... she's right out of this world
She's the Andricon Girl
After hours in the valley of downs, tripped-up all over town
After 3 she's down on Avenue C, kicking down with the clowns Right out of this world
And she's lost in the swirl...
right out of this world
She's the Andricon Girl
(Breathtaking, wasn't she? A truly beautiful woman...)
Groovin' in the galaxy, at albino bars, with Jesus Christ Porno Star
Running around, with her favorite crash she's a fatale gone wild With sharpened wire legs and a steel frame
saw the butane flame
She's terminal blue (repeat)
Taking a ride with the pretty things tonight
You know it's wrong but it feels so very right
Taking a ride with the pretty things tonight
You know it's wrong
but it feels so fuckin' right
Yeah...
Vera Blue, what's happened to you?
http://www.waste.org/chemlab/east.html
If anyone can help me figure out what the fuck this means?
(Oooooh, and you can download a copy from here: http://cnjbrown.home.mchsi.com/index.html)
Okay, moving along and indulging Xev's new fascination with Punk (tho' I'm not quite sure where the Pixies belong, genre wise):
"Number 13 Baby"
got hair in a girl
that flows to her bones
and a comb in her pocket
if the winds get blown
stripes on her eyes when she walks slow
but her face falls down
when she go, go, go
black tear falling on my lazy queen
gotta tattooed tit say number 13
viva
don't want no blue eyes
la loma
i want brown eyes
rica
i'm in a state
choir in the yard
in the house next door
where a grandma brought
some songs from the shore
six foot girl gonna
sweat when she dig
standing in her chinos shirt pulled off clean
stand close to the fire
when they light the pig
gotta tattooed tit say number 13
viva
don't want no blue eyes
la loma
i want brown eyes
rica
i'm in a state
Love this song. For the longest time I could not figure out whether the Number 13 girl was me or my fantasy.
She's more a part of my personality than anything else.
And now that I've digressed onto the subject of women:
CHILD OF THE MOON
(Jagger/Richards)
The wind blows rain into my face
The sun glows at the end of the highway
Child of the moon, rub your rainy eyes
Oh, child of the moon
Give me a wide-awake crescent-shaped smile
She shivers, by the light she is hidden
She flickers like a lamp lady vision
Child of the moon, rub your rainy eyes
Child of the moon
Give me a wide-awake crescent-shaped smile
The first car on the foggy road riding
The last star for my lady is pining
Oh, child of the moon, bid the sun arise
Oh, child of the moon
Give me a misty day, pearly gray, silver, silky faced,
Wide-awake crescent-shaped smile
I love this song. The instrumentation is so absolutely beautiful...
It's about being in love with some idealized conception of a woman. Beautiful, absolutely fucking beautiful.
Now that I've digressed onto the subject of love songs:
Smashing Pumpkins
Adore (1998)
Ava Adore
it's you that I adore
you'll always be my whore
you'll be the mother to my child
and a child to my heart
we must never be apart
we must never be apart
lovely girl you're the beauty in my wrold
without you there aren't reasons left to find
and I'll pull your crooked teeth
you'll be perfect just like me
you'll be a lover in my bed
and a gun to my head
we must never be apart
we must never be apart
in you I see dirty
in you I count stars
in you I feel so pretty
in you I taste god
in you I feel so hungry
in you I crash cars
we must never be apart
drinking mercury
to the mystery of all that you should ever seek to find
lovely girl you're the murder in my wrold
dressing coffins for the souls I've left behind
in time
we must never be apart
and you'll always be my whore
cause you're the one that i adore
and I'll pull your crooked teeth
you'll be perfect just like me
in you I feel so dirty in you I crash cars
in you I feel so pretty in you I taste god
we must never be apart

Wagner Antichrist of Sarcofago wrote some intelligent, thought-provoking lyrics on religion.
---------------------------------
I.N.R.I.
They say you've born to the eternal kidness
and that was conceived by divine grace
that cama to finish with the pervetion and evil
and died on the cross to humanity save
The pervetion and evil only start after you came
because you was only a crazy lier
false saints were with you on your insanity
and the more stupids believed on you
Thieves and corrupts
now eleited priests
they sellet pieces
of cloth saying it were yours
the chief of insanity
now is reigning at rome
the pervetio and evil
only start after you came
Fuck you, fuck you, fuck you Jesus Christ!
-------------------------------------
Satanas
On fire of darkness
rise a scream of hate
Satanas want vomit
on son of God's face
your eyes have wrath
and promiscing a slaughter
the angels of lucifer
are ready to destroy
Satanas
Satanas revengeis started
and the heaven is burning
God angels are deads
and the survivors are praying
the sacred cross is breacked
and demons are smiling
because your lord Satanas
raped the mother of false
Xev,
Oooo.... Like these lines
You can tell she's hydraulic
and...
She's terminal blue
I would like to think that this song is about sickness that comes from our industrialized society, not feeling like a person, more like a machine heading for self destruction. Kind of like a Radiohead song. It's probably about drugs though. ;)
Xenu:
I do not know. There is something in Vera Blue that is machine like. "Andricon" is not a word in any language I know of and a google search turns up only references to Vera Blue.
I do not think that it's about drugs, although there is a reference to drugs.
"It's 3:30am... all the streets are a blur
Heading for a wreck at the end of the world"
Self destruction, perhaps?
"You can tell she's hydraulic
A silver scream in super sonic
You can see the mercury smear in her eye"
Which emphasizes how inhuman Vera Blue is. Hydraulic? Mercury? A suggestion that Vera Blue is some sort of robot?
"Right out of this world
And she's lost in the swirl... she's right out of this world
She's the Andricon Girl"
She's in the world (lost in the swirl) but not of it (right out of this world) ?
"After hours in the valley of downs, tripped-up all over town
After 3 she's down on Avenue C, kicking down with the clowns"
A drug reference, and "clowns" could well be a reference to the rave scene.
"Right out of this world
And she's lost in the swirl...
right out of this world
She's the Andricon Girl
(Breathtaking, wasn't she? A truly beautiful woman...)"
Past tense. As if Vera Blue was a woman, but changed somehow.
"Groovin' in the galaxy, at albino bars, with Jesus Christ Porno Star"
Jesus Christ Porno Star is another of Chemlab's songs. It has a sense of - degradation and the loss of innocence*
"Running around, with her favorite crash she's a fatale gone wild With sharpened wire legs and a steel frame
saw the butane flame "
As if Vera Blue has retreated into a life of pure hedonism, and thus become a sort of robot to it.
"She's terminal blue (repeat)
Taking a ride with the pretty things tonight
You know it's wrong but it feels so very right
Taking a ride with the pretty things tonight
You know it's wrong
but it feels so fuckin' right"
The narrator knows that the choice Vera Blue made, to become a sort of hedonistic robot, it wrong...but it feels right?
"Yeah...
Vera Blue, what's happened to you?"
Expresses dismay at the transformation of Vera Blue to The Andricon Girl.

You walk a lonely road

Believe and you will find your way
Mornië alantië (Quenya: Darkness has fallen)
A promise lives within you now
May it be the shadow's call
Will fly away
May it be your journey on
To light the day
When the night is overcome
You may rise to find the sun
Mornië utúlië (Quenya: Darkness has come)
Believe and you will find your way
Mornië alantië (Quenya: Darkness has fallen)
A promise lives within you now
A promise lives within you now

I saw the best of my generation playing pinball
Maked up and caked up and lookin' like some kind of china doll
With all of Adolf Hitler's moves down cold
As they stood up in front of a rock and roll band
And always moving upward and ever upward
To this gentle golden promised land
With the smartest of them all moonlighting as a word processor
And the strongest of them all checking ID's outside saloons
And the prettiest of them all taking off her clothes
In front of men whose eyes look like they were in some
Little hick town near Omaha watching the police chief
Run his car off the side of a bridge
I saw men with dreams like the ones I'd had
Beg quarters outside the 7-11
Till it got so they didn't affect me anymore
Then the mailboxes I'd passed 'cept that sometimes
I'd put something in the mailbox
I'd had the wind at my back
Now I felt it cold in my face
And for an awful long time now you were the only one who ever
Called me late at night and I really never noticed till after
You stopped calling and the emptiness, silence got so heavy
Broken up in the wasteland
Broken up in the promised land
Broken up in Disneyland
Broken up in the plastic land
Broken up in the wasteland, broken up in the wasteland
Broken up in the wasteland
I saw dead Marilyn Monroe strung up on every street corner
In Hollywood like some two bit whore offering a discount rate
And I wondered how Joe DiMaggio felt
I saw dead James Dean's ghost wandering the sidewalk
Looking troubled and I wondered how his mama felt
I saw signs that said head shots done for cheap
Signs that said extras wanted top dollars paid
Signs for haircuts signs for manicures and
Signs for tanning salons and signs for wardrobe specialists
Signs for cosmetic surgery and signs for assertiveness training
And I stopped to read them all
And every single block looked like every single block
Looked like every single block looked like every single block
Looked like every single block but you kept driving
Cause everyone else kept driving and cause gridlock
Is evil and not knowing your way is evil
And those that had money looked good but weren't too happy
And those who didn't have money didn't look so good
And weren't too happy either and in a city of three million
two hundred and sixty nine thousand nine hundred eighty four
Everyone was lonely
Broken up in the wasteland
Broken up in the promised land
Broken up in Disneyland
Broken up in the plastic land
Broken up in the wasteland, broken up in the wasteland
Broken up in the wasteland
And I watched as everyone I knew spent their lives
Trying to be watched on a stage or watched on a film
Or listened to on a record and they thought well maybe
That way I could get a little love out of this life
And I watched as the best of my generation abandoned their dreams
And settled for making a little money
And I watched TV and read the papers and listened to the radio
And made all the fancy scenes and said all the right words
And wore all the right clothes and knew the names of the hip people
But I still felt out of touch so I stopped watching TV
And reading the papers and listening to the radio
And making the fancy scenes and saying the right words
And wearing the right clothes and knowing the names of the hip people
And I felt more out of touch than ever but I didn't care anymore
And I felt you slipping away, and I felt myself slipping from you
And I wanted more than anything else for it to rain for one
Whole day like it used to but all there ever was was sun
Relentless sun hot beating sun and everyone wore their
Sunglasses and walked around like flies under a magnifying glass
With their eyes removed
Broken up in the wasteland
Broken up in the promised land
Broken up in Disneyland
Broken up in the plastic land
Broken up in the wasteland, broken up in the wasteland
Broken up in the wasteland, broken up in the wasteland
Broken up in the wasteland

CAMP GRENADA
(Alan Sherman)
Hello muddah, hello faddah
Here I am at Camp Granada
Camp is very entertaining
And they say we'll have some fun if it stops raining.
I went hiking with Joe Spivy
He developed poison ivy
You remember Leonard Skinner
He got ptomaine poisoning last night after dinner.
All the counselors hate the waiters
And the lake has alligators
And the head coach wants no sissies
So he reads to us from something called Ulysses.
How I don't want this should scare ya
But my bunkmate has malaria
You remember Jeffrey Hardy
They're about to organize a searching party.
Take me home, oh muddah, faddah
Take me home, I hate Granada
Don't leave me out in the forest where
I might get eaten by a bear.
Take me home I promise I will not make noise
Or mess the house with other boys.
Oh please don't make me stay
I've been here one whole day.
Dearest faddah, darling muddah,
How's my precious little bruddah
Let me come home, if you miss me
I would even let Aunt Bertha hug and kiss me.
Wait a minute, it's stopped hailing.
Guys are swimming, guys are sailing
Playing baseball, gee that's better
Muddah, faddah kindly disregard this letter.

To everyone who's lost someone they love
Long before it was their time
You feel like the days you had were not enough
when you said goodbye
And to all of the people with burdens and pains
Keeping you back from your life
You believe that there's nothing and there is no one
Who can make it right
Chorus
There is hope for the helpless
Rest for the weary
Love for the broken heart
There is grace and forgiveness
Mercy and healing
He'll meet you wherever you are
Cry out to Jesus, Cry out to Jesus
For the marriage that's struggling just to hang on
They lost all of their faith and love
They've done all they can to make it right again
Still it's not enough
For the ones who can't break the addictions and chains
You try to give up but you come back again
Just remember that you're not alone in your shame
And your suffering
Chorus
When your lonely (when you're lonely)
And it feels like the whole world is falling on you
You just reach out, you just cry out to Jesus
Cry to Jesus
To the widow who suffers from being alone
Wiping the tears from her eyes
For the children around the world without a home
Say a prayer tonight
Chorus
hand's down the most brilliant, AFI Sing the Sorrow. the whole record really, but this song is just...
"This Celluloid Dream"
Calling tears from deep inside, oh, you're so exquisite
And in the mirror, all midnight eyes
Oh, if I could remain, but it's just a visit
All midnight eyes read "vacancy"
Twisted, twisting
To the lovely dancing lights, I begged, "May I cut in?"
But they never stopped playing "their song"
Of a joyous song they sing, I've heard whispers
On a freezing note, I resonate
Just like romantic verses, just like a joyous end
Just like a memory, it twists me
Just like romantic verses, just like a joyous end
Twist... twisting me
You land as lightly as the new snow, cinematic
Onto the melting boy, and melt away
You light as gently, you're so cinematic
Bathed in your radiance, I melt
In the glitter, in the dark, sunk into velvet
Praying this will never end
In the shadow of a star, in static pallor
I realized I never began
Just like romantic verses, just like a joyous end
Just like a memory, it twists me
Just like romantic verses, just like a joyous end
Twist... twisting me
You land as lightly as the new snow, cinematic
Onto the melting boy, and melt away
You light as gently, you're so cinematic
Bathed in your radiance, I melt
All the colours upon leaving, all will turn to grey
All the colours upon leaving, all will turn to grey
(All grey) All the colours (All grey) upon leaving
(All grey) all will turn to grey
(All grey) All the colours (All grey) upon leaving
(All grey) all will turn to grey... grey... twisting me
You land as lightly as the new snow, cinematic
Onto the melting boy, and melt away
You light as gently, you're so cinematic
Bathed in your radiance
You land as lightly as the new snow, cinematic
You land as lightly as the new snow, and melt away
You land as lightly as the new snow, cinematic
Bathed in your radiance, I melt
you gotta listen...

"Closing Time"
Leonard Cohen
Ah we're drinking and we're dancing
and the band is really happening
and the Johnny Walker wisdom running high
And my very sweet companion
she's the Angel of Compassion
she's rubbing half the world against her thigh
And every drinker every dancer
lifts a happy face to thank her
the fiddler fiddles something so sublime
all the women tear their blouses off
and the men they dance on the polka-dots
and it's partner found, it's partner lost
and it's hell to pay when the fiddler stops:
it's CLOSING TIME
Yeah the women tear their blouses off
and the men they dance on the polka-dots
and it's partner found, it's partner lost
and it's hell to pay when the fiddler stops:
it's CLOSING TIME
Ah we're lonely, we're romantic
and the cider's laced with acid
and the Holy Spirit's crying, "Where's the beef?"
And the moon is swimming naked
and the summer night is fragrant
with a mighty expectation of relief
So we struggle and we stagger
down the snakes and up the ladder
to the tower where the blessed hours chime
and I swear it happened just like this:
a sigh, a cry, a hungry kiss
the Gates of Love they budged an inch
I can't say much has happened since
but CLOSING TIME
I swear it happened just like this:
a sigh, a cry, a hungry kiss
the Gates of Love they budged an inch
I can't say much has happened since
CLOSING TIME
I loved you for your beauty
but that doesn't make a fool of me:
you were in it for your beauty too
and I loved you for your body
there's a voice that sounds like God to me
declaring, declaring, declaring that your body's really you
And I loved you when our love was blessed
and I love you now there's nothing left
but sorrow and a sense of overtime
and I missed you since the place got wrecked
And I just don't care what happens next
looks like freedom but it feels like death
it's something in between, I guess
it's CLOSING TIME
Yeah I missed you since the place got wrecked
By the winds of change and the weeds of sex
looks like freedom but it feels like death
it's something in between, I guess
it's CLOSING TIME
Yeah we're drinking and we're dancing
but there's nothing really happening
and the place is dead as Heaven on a Saturday night
And my very close companion
gets me fumbling gets me laughing
she's a hundred but she's wearing
something tight
and I lift my glass to the Awful Truth
which you can't reveal to the Ears of Youth
except to say it isn't worth a dime
And the whole damn place goes crazy twice
and it's once for the devil and once for Christ
but the Boss don't like these dizzy heights
we're busted in the blinding lights,
busted in the blinding lights
of CLOSING TIME
The whole damn place goes crazy twice
and it's once for the devil and once for Christ
but the Boss don't like these dizzy heights
we're busted in the blinding lights,
busted in the blinding lights
of CLOSING TIME
Oh the women tear their blouses off
and the men they dance on the polka-dots
It's CLOSING TIME
And it's partner found, it's partner lost
and it's hell to pay when the fiddler stops
It's CLOSING TIME
I swear it happened just like this:
a sigh, a cry, a hungry kiss
It's CLOSING TIME
The Gates of Love they budged an inch
I can't say much has happened since
But CLOSING TIME
I loved you when our love was blessed
I love you now there's nothing left
But CLOSING TIME
I miss you since the place got wrecked
By the winds of change and the weeds of sex.

I'm A Stranger Here Lyrics by Five Man Electrical Band
Well I’m a stranger here in this place called Earth
And I was sent down here to discover the worth
Of your little blue planet third from the sun
Come on and show me what you’ve done
We’ve got the aero plane, we’ve got the automobile
We’ve got sky scrapin’ buildings made of glass and steel
We’ve got synthetic food that nearly tastes real
And a little white pill that makes you feel “Hey!”
A whole lot better when you get outta bed
You take one in the mornin’ for the long day ahead
We’ve got everything everybody needs to survive
Surely the good life has arrived
I think your atmosphere is hurting my eyes
And your concrete mountains are blacking out the skies
Now I don’t say that you’ve been telling me lies
But why do I hear those children’s cries
I’m a stranger here, I’m just looking around
I see the aero planes carrying the bombs
Why, you’ve even found people to drop them on
You know you can’t keep what you take by force
But it’s only my first impression of course
And I’m a stranger here on the planet Earth
We’ve got the rivers and the mountains and the valleys and the trees
We’ve got the birds in the sky, we’ve got the fish in the sea
We’ve got the –
Oh you crazy fools don’t you know you had it made
You were living in Paradise
But take it from one who knows
Who knows the gates of Heaven can close
I only pray that you take my advice
Because Paradise won’t come twice
Well I’m a stranger here in this place called Earth
And I was sent down here to discover the worth
Of your little blue planet third from the sun
I think I’ll go back home where I come from

"The Last Resort"
The Eagles
She came from Providence,
the one in Rhode Island
Where the old world shadows hang
heavy in the air
She packed her hopes and dreams
like a refugee
Just as her father came across the sea
She heard about a place people were smilin'
They spoke about the red man's way,
and how they loved the land
And they came from everywhere
to the Great Divide
Seeking a place to stand
or a place to hide
Down in the crowded bars,
out for a good time,
Can't wait to tell you all,
what it's like up there
And they called it paradise
I don't know why
Somebody laid the mountains low
while the town got high
Then the chilly winds blew down
Across the desert
through the canyons of the coast, to
the Malibu
Where the pretty people play,
hungry for power
to light their neon way
and give them things to do
Some rich men came and raped the land,
Nobody caught 'em
Put up a bunch of ugly boxes, and Jesus,
people bought 'em
And they called it paradise
The place to be
They watched the hazy sun, sinking in the sea
You can leave it all behind
and sail to Lahaina
just like the missionaries did, so many years ago
They even brought a neon sign: "Jesus is coming"
Brought the white man's burden down
Brought the white man's reign
Who will provide the grand design?
What is yours and what is mine?
'Cause there is no more new frontier
We have got to make it here
We satisfy our endless needs and
justify our bloody deeds,
in the name of destiny and the name of God
And you can see them there,
On Sunday morning
They stand up and sing about
what it's like up there
They call it paradise
I don't know why
You call someplace paradise,
kiss it goodbye

Joni Mitchell had a bunch of great songs, but this one is one of my favorites
Raised on Robbery
He was sitting in the lounge of the Empire Hotel
He was drinking for diversion
He was thinking for himself
A little money riding on the Maple Leafs
Along comes a lady in lacy sleeves
She says let me sit down
You know, drinkin' alone's a shame
It's a shame it's a crying shame
Look at those jokers
Glued to that damn hockey game
Hey honey-you've got lots of cash
Bring us round a bottle
And we'll have some laughs
Gin's what I'm drinking
I was raised on robbery
I'm a pretty good cook
I'm sitting on my groceries
Come up to my kitchen
I'll show you my best recipe
I try and I try but I can't save a cent
I'm up after midnight cooking
Trying to make my rent
I'm rough but I'm pleasin'
I was raised on robbery
We had a little money once
They were pushing through a four lane highway
Government gave us three thousand dollars
You should have seen it fly away
First he bought a '57 Biscayne
He put it in the ditch
He drunk up all the rest
That son of a bitch
His blood's bad whiskey
I was raised on robbery
You know you ain't bad looking
I like the way you hold your drinks
Come home with me honey
I ain't asking for no full length mink
Hey, where you going
Don't go yet
Your glass ain't empty and we just met
You're mean when your loaded
I was raised on robbery

Sittin' At A Bar lyrics by Rehab
Bar tender I really did it this time
Broke my parole to have a good time
When I got home it was 6 a.m.
The door was locked so I kicked it in
She was trippin' on the bills
I think she was high on some pills
She through my shit out into the yard
Then she called me a bum and slapped me real hard
And in my drunkin' stooper
I did what I should of never done
Now I'm sittin' here talking to you
Drunk and on the run
I'm sittin' at a bar on the inside
Waitin' for my ride on the outside
She broke my heart in the trailer park
So I jacked the keys to her fuckin' car
Crashed that piece of shit and then stepped away
You know mo I'll probably get ten years
So just give me beers til they get here
Yeah I know the sun is comin' up
And ya'll are probably gettin' ready for closin' up
But I'm trying to drown my soul
I'm tired of this life on a dirt road
And everythang that I love is gone
And I'm tired of hangin' on
She got me sittin' at a bar on the inside
Waitin' for my ride on the outside
She stole my heart in the trailer park
So I jacked the keys to her fuckin' car
Crashed that piece of shit and then stepped away
I guess it's meant to be
Romance is misery
So much for memories
And now I'm headed to the Penitentiary
See me on T.V.
The next cop series
I am a danger
I guess I shoul've done something about my anger
But I'll never learn
Real things I don't concern
I poor kerosene on everything I love and watch it burn
I know it's my fault
But I wasn't happy it was over
She through a fit so I crashed that piece of shit nova
And now I'm goin' back again
Back to the pin to see my friends
And when we all pile out that county van
They'll ask me where I've been
I've been at a bar on the inside
Waitin' for my ride on the outside
She stole my heart in the trailer park
So I jacked the keys to her fuckin' car
Crashed that piece of shit and then stepped away
Clever and funny while telling a sad tale of a life destroyed by alcohol.

Isn't Life Strange
Isn't life strange
A turn of the page
Can read like before
Can we ask for more?
Each day passes by
How hard man will try?
The sea will not wait
You know it makes me want to cry, cry, cry -
Wished I could be in your heart
To be one with your love
Wished I could be in your eyes
Looking back there you were, and here we are.
Isn't love strange
A word we arrange
With no thought or care
Maker of despair
Each breath that we breathe
With love we must weave
To make us as one
You know it makes me want to cry, cry, cry -
Wished I could be in your heart
To be one with your love
Wished I could be in your eyes
Looking back there you were, and here we are.
Isn't life strange
A turn of the page
A book without light
Unless with love we write;
To throw it away
To lose just a day
The quicksand of time
You know it makes me want to cry, cry, cry -
Wished I could be in your heart
To be one with your love
Wished I could be in your eyes
Looking back there you were:

The Lost Children
Mine
Lyrics:
Been watching for a long time
Seeing the world drawing closer
To the edge of calamity
How many of our wars have started
Over mankind's opiate, We call religion
Too many of our children have died,
In the never-ending fight for territory
Are we born to violence?
Can we stop in time?
(They Say) You were warned to remain on your side
You'll be starting a war now if you cross that line
Turn around or face my reprisal,
For I have determined
That this is mine
Been hurting for a long time
Feeling my heart torn open
From the lack of humanity
Insanity on both sides
Paving the path that guarantees our own extinction
Hate added to the stockpile
Filling the world with enemies
A constant battle, in the face of violence
They emit their cry
(They Say) You were warned to remain on your side
You'll be starting a war now if you cross that line
Turn around or face my reprisal,
For I have determined
That this is mine
(Chant)
You were warned to remain on your side
You'll be starting a war now if you cross that line
Turn around or face my reprisal
For I have determined that this is mine
We will not be broken this time
We will force the whole world to testify
Stand your ground or face our reprisal
For we have determined
That this is?
