The most shameful, disgusting era in the history of this country.
    Good riddance.

    Materialism run rampant.
Corporations getting their stronghold on social consciousness.
99% of the music was shit - big hair rock??
Art fell apart. Warhol was considered ART!
Reagan repealed the tarrifs, paving the way for the destruction of manufacturing jobs and our financial independence.
Loss of respect and appreciation for everything of hand-crafted quality.
Shift from workers to brokers - all the blue collars turned white.
    Birth of the Neo-Cons
    Celebrity culture ran rampant.
I could go on and on...
There was very little good, that came out of the 80's aside from the 90's.

The 80's were the antithesis of the late 60's.

i dont know if you noticed but our future generation have become a consumers drones who are ignorant and clueless. in the 80's it was the exact opposite, at least as I remember it.

It was the 80's that kicked off the trend to turn children into consumerist robots.
Optimus Prime is a PERFECT example.
What cartoon or kids show in the 80's did not make most of their revenue by selling merchandise?
Not only did every show have toys based on it, they had shows based on toys.

optimus wasnt a consumer product, he was a symbol. why do you think his colors are blue, red and white? now all the cartoons are idiotic. well, almost all of them.

Regardless of what color he was, they made millions from selling toys based on the cartoons. It was the birth of child consumerism.
What about the other ten thousand consumer toys marketed to children that were not red, white and blue?

Besides, since when could people not capitalize on patriotism? That's absurd.

I was born in the late 80s so I missed most of the decade. What makes the 80s better than the 70s or the 90s?

toys were there before optimus. if you want proof you are wrong, just check what happened to the franchise after the 1986 movie. here in israel they wouldnt even play the 3rd season that followed because it was that bad. the producers apparently thoughts like you, and they were deadly wrong.

and just check the 80's porn. back then women looked like women, today they look like plastic on 2 legs.

What the hell are you talking about?
I didn't say Optimus was the first toy to exist.

I know nothing about what happened in Israel - If you view my first response in this thread, you will see I was referring specifically to the US.
Regardless, what does the success or failure of teh franchise have to do with anything at all that we are talking about?

They looked like plastic then too, just with much bigger hair, more makeup and nasty clothes.

the 80's was when fascism became chic, in several senses.

American psycho, the film, dissects that decade rather skillfully. You can see the main character as a metaphor for what really was (not really hidden at all ) in those 'values.'

Queen, really cool looking stealth fighter jets, me, my friends. hmm, thats about it!

    90's..
invention of the internet - I think that pretty much beats everything from the 80's on its own. =D

I'm so happy to have lived during the 1950's when prices for everything were very cheap....10 cents for a gallon of gas! Then the 1960's when music was really finding some very talented and great artists that could really sing and put great music together as well as the hippies!

there were loads of good cheesy movies from the 80s but not many actually good ones...
early 90s action movies rocked balls.
