Hi, I'm with EarthSky - maybe you've heard our science program, Earth & Sky, on the radio. We have an opportunity to set up webcasts for Shell, the oil company.

We want to know: What questions would you like to ask a Shell scientist? Say, if you had the opportunity to meet him or her face-to-face, what would you want to know?

Thank you so much for your thoughts.

Q: Seriously, you don't believe in peak oil? (or just lying about it?)

Given that the CEO, Jeroen van der Veer, said this in an internal Shell memo in January 2008....
We are experiencing a step-change in the growth rate of energy demand due to population growth and economic development, and Shell estimates that after 2015 supplies of easy-to-access oil and gas will no longer keep up with demand.
....it would seem to be a waste of a question.

At what price per gallon would there be a serious drop in US demand for gasoline?

How can you live with yourself? How can you sleep at night?

Well, I could have asked his favorite position to drill, but I really want to hear the words "peak oil" or "finite resource" from an oil CEO's lips...

But if I can ask more questions:

What is your favorite position to drill and how long can you keep it up? Also, can we expect any result from drilling faster than 9 months, I mean what is the average length in years between starting to drill and coming online for underwater exploration?

Whats the cost of bringing a barrel of US offshore oil to market?

As opposed to its market price.

Why dont you lobby the government to have every farmer in America grow his own bio-diesel?

Thereby lowering the demand and price of the petro-diesel America's truckers need?

Exxon is currently funding ethanol research.

Why bother researching when you could be buying up cheap land in and around the gulf of mexico for sugarcane production?

Or running TV ads informing the public that corn ethanol is a dumb idea?

    Hi Lindsay,

I would ask him the following questions:

    1) Tell me Dr., describe the university level courses in physics that you took while you were studying? Are you aware that the Second Law of Thermodynamics prohibits the formation of complex hydrocarbons at pressures in the earth's crust?

    2) Tell me Dr., how many fossils does it take to produce a barrel of crude oil?

    3) Tell me Dr., how much oil and gas have you discovered lately? Did you drill at the Natural History Museum? I hear there are lots of fossils there.

Thanks everyone, for your contributions. We've been discussing them, and hopefully we'll be able to put them to a scientist soon!

    How about...

Is shell considering harvesting and selling other forms of energy?

Why the former Shell president lied so obviously on the Glenn Beck show? He said we will NEVER run out of oil.
Not 100 or 200 years, but never. Kind of takes away his credibility....

The thing is, what can we ask when:

    1. We already know the answers.
    2. We know they are going to lie...

So, there is really no point in asking....

Somewhere between 3 trillion barrels and infinity.
