We have talked about this several times. Why do so many parents allow their children to drive before they are 18?

This question came up quite a while ago with another guy we know that rides motorcycles. He was hit by a 16 year old who was not paying attention to his driving. It put the man in the hospital for almost a month. The parents had minimal liability insurance on their teenager. That covered very little of the cost of his total medical bills. The father came to see him at the hospital to talk to him about the accident. He ended up telling the father that he could literally take him to the cleaners for his son's stupidity, but that if he would agree to pay his medical bills and time off from work, he would not sue him. Of course, the father agreed because he could also have sued for pain and suffering.

This article sums it up very nicely.

the problem isnt underage drivers, the problem is your society in which people would actually sue someone and take every penny they have because of an accident.

that said ive always had third party insurance on my cars just to be safe incase someone with an expensive car claimed i hit them.
