So looks like our community diagnosis was correct and the motherboard died in the older computer. I put its HD into my newer computer, both using XP.

Is there any issue what I should be aware of? I am going to use this 2nd HD for back ups mostly for pictures, otherwise I won't even keep it hooked up. Is that a good idea, or should I just let it be?

Also, is this 2nd HD spinning all the time or only when I try to access it?

You don't need to have the second HD hooked up at all. Just leave it alone until you want to use it for something. Make sure you first shut off the operating HD completely then plug in the second HD then start it up as the slave. Always use your primary HD as the start up boot one. It will see the slave when you get it booted up then do what you want.

It won't hurt a thing to leave it connected. I have four hard drives in my computer at this time. The oldest dates from 2002.
