Well, in all fairness, it wasn't actually the customer's details that were sold. That infomation just happened to be on the harddrive of system sold by an ex-employee. (Sloppy internal company security procedures!!!!)

If he had actually sold the data itself, he would have gotten MUCH more for it on the black market. After which, he could have cleaned it off the harddrive and still sold the computer. (It would have taken a very savvy buyer to discover it had ever been on there.)
