The United States Navy, Best Military Service in History!!

I am a Navy veteran, and despite these many years I still tear up when I see these military ceremonies. Do other vet feel the same way? There is a special place in my heart for the Navy and for those that take up the uniform. And I am deeply angered when our political leaders abuse the loyalty of these young men and women in service to our country.

These guys don't threaten to attack. They either attack or they don't. Politicians threaten to attack.

I'll be happy with anything that demotivates Americans from occupying other countries. Sorry, any sight or mention of US and armed forces just screams occupation and torture to me.

Americans by and large do not want to occupy other countries SAM. Americans don't want to use the military, unless it defends life. Politicians on the other hand like to use military power for other reasons.
One branch of our military is devoted to saving lives on the sea...that is the United States Coast Guard. They venture out in all kinds of weather to save lives...a courageous lot. My son serves with them. They are just every day heros.

The only thing I know about the US navy is that the soldiers use to decapitate the Japanese [dead or alive? who knows?] and drag their heads in the water tied to the ships, so the skulls would be cleaned before being boiled in lye as war trophies. Thats the kind of stuff I associate with the navy. Now they are in the Persian Gulf. Maybe they will attack and bomb Iran. Kill more innocent people for oil and money. Open secret prisons. Torture rape and murder. Who cares how they present themselves? If they stayed at home, it would be a different matter, but they don't, do they?

I think you might be a little confused SAM. Americans did not behead Japanese in WWII. Americans did not and do not carry sabres into combat. The Japanese did. And there is plenty of documentation to show the Japanese decapitatd captives with those swords. As for tying heads to ships, I dare you to try to tie a head to any part of a ship..just ain't gonna happen SAM and did not happen. The Japanese didn't even do that. It just physically is not possible.

And the American troops did not rape and pillage as you seem to think they did. Americans are not a war like people. We are just average folk trying to make an honest living.

"Japanese skulls were much-envied trophies among U.S. Marines in the Pacific theater during World War II. The practice of collecting them apparently began after the bloody conflict on Guadalcanal, when the troops set up the skulls as ornaments or totems atop poles as a type of warning. The Marines boiled the skulls and then used lye to remove any residual flesh so they would be suitable as souvenirs. U.S. sailors cleaned their trophy skulls by putting them in nets and dragging them behind their vessels. Winfield Townley Scott wrote a wartime poem, 'The U.S. Sailor with the Japanese Skull" that detailed the entire technique of preserving the headskull as a souvenir. In 1943 Life magazine published the picture of a U.S. sailor's girlfriend contemplating a Japanese skull sent to her as a gift - with a note written on the top of the skull. Referring to this practice, Edward L. Jones, a U.S. war correspondent in the Pacific wrote in the February 1946 Atlantic Magazine, "We boiled the flesh off enemy skulls to make table ornaments for sweethearts, or carved their bones into letter-openers." On occasion, these "Japanese trophy skulls" have confused police when they have turned up during murder investigations. It has been reported that when the remains of Japanese soldiers were repatriated from the Mariana Islands in 1984, sixty percent were missing their skulls."

Discharged servicemen from each branch of military service, as well as civilian contractors, medical personnel and academics, all gave testimony about war crimes they had committed or witnessed during the years of 1963-1970.

From almost the beginning of the war, soldiers wrote home describing the atrocities committed against Filipinos, soldiers and civilians alike. Increasingly, such personal letters, or portions of them, reached a national audience as anti-imperialist editors across the nation reproduced them.[71]

Once these accounts were widely reproduced, the War Department was forced to demand that General Otis investigate their authenticity. For each press clipping, he forwarded it to the writer’s commanding officer, who would then convince the soldier to write a retraction.

Private Charles Brenner of the Kansas regiment resisted such pressure. He insisted that Colonel Funston[72] had ordered that all prisoners be shot and that Major Metcalf and Captain Bishop enforced these orders. Otis was obliged to order the Northern Luzon sector commander, General MacArthur, to look into the charge. Brenner confronted MacArthur’s aide with a corroborating witness, Private Putman, who confessed to shooting two prisoners after Bishop or Metcalf ordered, “Kill them! Damn it, Kill them!” MacArthur sent his aide’s report on to Otis with no comment. Otis ordered Brenner court-martialed “for writing and conniving at the publication of an article which... contains willful falsehoods concerning himself and a false charge against Captain Bishop.” The judge advocate in Manila convinced Otis that such a trial could open a Pandora’s box because “facts would develop implicating many others.”

General Otis sent the Brenner case to Washington writing: “After mature deliberation, I doubt the wisdom of court-martial in this case, as it would give the insurgent authorities a knowledge of what was taking place and they would assert positively that our troops had practiced inhumanities, whether the charge should be proven or not, as they would use it as an excuse to defend their own barbarities;” and Otis went on, justifying the war crimes, “and it is not thought that his charge is very grievous under the circumstances then existing, as it was very early in the war, and the patience of our men was under great strain.”[73]

You are correct, Marines are a part of the Department of the Navy. They go together like a hand in a glove.

You have quite a lot of baggage there, Vietnam, WWII and the Philipines Revolution. First, trophies in WWII were weapons not heads. First the troops would not want to and the leaderhip and health authorities would never permit it. It didn't happen SAM. Just because someone wrote it does not make it truth.
Let's put some flavor on the the Phillipine Revolution. First the revolution started before the United States took possesion of the Phillipines. The revolution began under Spanish rule which was very harsh and cruel. The United States gained possesion of in 1989 in the Spanish American War which was a very brief war. The revolution ended in 1913. And the United States put the Phillipines on a course for independence. Residents of the Phillipines discovered that American rule was not at all like Spanish rule. And that is why Americans and Phillipinos fought together against the Japanese when they invaded. And that is why to this day we are the best of friends.

They may go hand in hand in operations, but the Marines are no longer a branch of the Navy.
They are an armed force which operates completely independently from the Navy and falls under the Depratment of the Navy only administratively.

American mutilation of Japanese war dead

During World War II, some United States military personnel mutilated dead Japanese service personnel in the Pacific theater of operations. The mutilation of Japanese service personnel included the taking of body parts as “war souvenirs” and “war trophies”. Teeth were the most commonly taken objects, but skulls and other body parts were sometimes also collected.

On February 1, 1943, Life magazine published a famous photograph by Ralph Morse which showed the charred, open-mouthed, decapitated head of a Japanese soldier killed by U.S Marines during the Guadalcanal campaign, and propped up below the gun turret of a tank by Marines. The caption read as follows: "A Japanese soldier's skull is propped up on a burned-out Jap tank by U.S. troops." Life received letters of protest from mothers who had sons in the war and others "in disbelief that American soldiers were capable of such brutality toward the enemy." The editors of Life explained that "war is unpleasant, cruel, and inhuman. And it is more dangerous to forget this than to be shocked by reminders." Indeed, remarkably, Life received more than twice as many protest letters over a photograph of a mistreated cat in the same issue than they did over the photo of the severed head of the Japanese soldier.

In 1984 Japanese soldiers remains were repatriated from the Mariana Islands. Roughly 60 percent were missing their skulls.

News that President Roosevelt had been given a bone letter opener by a congressman were widely reported in Japan. The Americans were portrayed as “deranged, primitive, racist and inhuman”. This reporting was compounded by the previous May 22, 1944 Life Magazine picture of the week publication of a young woman with a skull trophy.[32] Hoyt in "Japan’s war: the great Pacific conflict" argues that the Allied practice of mutilating the Japanese dead and taking pieces of them home was exploited by Japanese propaganda very effectively, and "contributed to a preference to death over surrender and occupation, shown, for example, in the mass civilian suicides on Saipan and Okinawa after the Allied landings
