According to that article I wouldn't want to be Prof. K. Warwick trying to go over to the states from when he had his "implant".

This applies to a lot more than just electronic devices: as well as books, pamphlets and other written materials.

Even better? They don't legally require probable cause. Land of the free indeed.

Wiped or used? I believe that qualifies under "written materials."

This is starting to get out of hand. I wonder how many Americans actually agree with these policies? I still haven't met one.

Anyone looking to travel internationally with a laptop should look into TrueCrypt and how it can be set up to offer plausible deniability for private data. That way even if they do make an image of your hard disk, it will take them a very long time to recover the keys, and they won't ever know about your hidden volumes.

There are far worse stories. Including one Prof who wanted to attend to a conference in the USA and hist laptop was swiped for explosives. As he used the laptop in the lab, residues of nitrate were found and he was held and questioned for one or two days.
And there is at least one documented case in which the laptop was confiscated and either never returned or returned after two years. All the research data was copied, of course.

Here's a thought....why not send it ahead with UPS or Fed Ex, that way there's no problem at all and it will be waiting at your hotel when you get here.

Not overnight, just send it a few days before you leave.

yogurt unlike other products has this tendency to go foul...since it is a milk product...in addition to that in needs to be contained in cold thermal isolating container of sorts.
