http://encarta.msn.com/encnet/features/columns/Default.aspx?article=scienceeatbug I know a friend who tried a bug dish before, I can't remember exactly what kind. He said it was just like eating potato chips. I'll stick with my chicken, beef and pork thanks... but I am a teeny tiny bit curious. Maybe one of these days I'll pick up this guy's book and try one recipe. Just one.
I've eaten honey ants and regularly eat crustaceans, echinoderms and molluscs of many varieties. Delicious.
Heh, from a quick google search on the lollipop mentioned in the article: Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! http://store.gardensare.com/insect-candy.html
Ok, but form what I can gather from the articles only grasshoppers and mealworms are eaten regularly in the West.
Oh, I don't think either are eaten regularly, not sure where you got that impression. It's very much a niche food.
Oh ok.. I just assumed Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! Ok.. which are eaten the most ?
You have made a distinction between terrestrial crustaceans and molluscs and aquatic. Crabs, crayfish and many other aquatic crustaceans are regularly consumed as are molluscs such as mussels, oysters, squid, octopus and echinoderms are eaten too; urchins.
Yeah. You've made the dubious distinction between terrestrial bugs and aquatic. You'd know better than most that they often belong to both categories. I haven't tried Bogong moths yet ( roasted in the coals but I will. I've certainly golloped up a tequila soaked scorpion and catepillar or two. Witchetty grubs are on my must try list. I've eaten sea cucumbers, turban shells, terrestrial snails and (not bugs) but many, many varieties of seaweed
Many people eat bugs because there's no other food source for they have decimated the types of animals that once thrived where they live because of overpopulation. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
Technically the term "bug" is reserved for the Hemiptera (true bugs). The "popular" use describes a rather unspecified group of little animals, but is usually restricted to invertebrates. So I guess you could include "sea bugs" as well.
I know that mexicans have always had a taste for bugs and that they have ben eaten regulary since Aztec times.... Fly egg burgers served with a bitter chocalate sauce is one that stood out to me, but i'm unable too find any link on the web for it at the mo Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! There are a few restaurants around that specialise in insect food product's I think that the eating of insects is called entomophagy so I suppose you would be a entomophagist but that would be a question for 'Fraggle the Great' if he can be coaxed out of the Linguistics cave......lol
Just read the link properly and yes it is entomophagy bbut it's already been stated sry...Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
