I haven't been in the loop with private/free WoW servers for 2 years, but I'll share my experience I had with them.

They were all very laggy and could not support many players online at one time. The server emulators were often buggy, sometimes so bad that all the scores on the server required a reset.

It was difficult to find a free server that was (1)reliably up and running, (2)was not horrendously laggy (I often played with 1-2 second lag. I'd click and the action wouldn't happen for 1-2 seconds) (3)not full of cheaters because of bugs in the server emulators, (4) had a decently sized population of players.

In the entire game world, there would be maybe 20 players online at a time on the best server I found - you'd rarely see another player and it was basically playing this MMO as a single player game.

The world's geography were identical, but many of the quests/NPCs were not working properly or did not work at all.

Why has everyone had such bad experiences with private servers? There are actually a lot of servers with 400+ people on(not that many) and with 250ms delay/lag. In my opinion, if you have a lot of friends(4+) who also play WoW you could all play on a private server together, and that is very enjoyable, but otherwise you really don't get the WoW experience with private servers. Sorry for such a late post but I had to inform.

I wasn't sure if you went out and bought WoW already or something. BTW, the server my friends and I use is at: http://www.meahwow.com/.
