I use my desktop to keep my word documents on but whenever I use a document and close it, it is always put to the nearest empty slot to the left, rather than back where it came from. Does anyone know how I can change this?

    Cheers

    Right-click on your Desktop.

    Arrange Icons By

    Then uncheck Align To Grid.

Note: storing files on your Desktop does significantly slow down your system performance.

I have one thing on my Desktop: the Recycle Bin.

And that's just because I've yet to do the RegHack on it since my most recent install.

right click on desktop and choose "arrange icons by" and uncheck "arrange to grid" and uncheck "Auto Arrange"

Umm this solution has not worked. If I load up a word document that is place on the right hand side of the screen when I re-save it, it will then appear in the first empty slot on the right hand side. Any ideas? Changing the setting as suggested has not solved it.

Uncheck "automatic align" the one above align to grid (assuming you use Vista).
Hmm I see it's "Auto arrange".. Draqon already suggested it.
