There are a few ways to get one. Join the military is the first way. Become a Fedral employee that works in that department. Be a sub contractor for them that needs clearances to do things for them.
The only way a civilian get's DoD clearance is for his existing employer to sponsor him. A new employer won't do that as it takes months; however (as you have seen), they will accept employees whose previous employer already sponsored them.
interesting, how do they get new employees? My father used to work for the goverment department (now defunt) called defence surport. This ment he had to have an ASIO check which is much more detailed than a simple police check.
They hire internally with DoD sponsorship or hire from other companies where certain employees have already been sponsored. It's a really crappy system.
CC that doesnt really alow new employees to get into the buiness. How to they replace employees lost through retirement or death?
I had two assignments that required a DoD clearence. I was already working for the company when they got the contract. All it took was an FBI background check that took about 6 weeks to come back.
that sounds like what dad had to do to get the job at defence surport. However im not sure if that was his first job in the public service or if he had transfered from another department
Like I said, it's not a good system. Employees within a company could be candidates for upcoming positions requiring DoD clearance. If one works out then he/she is sponsored and once the process is finished they transition to the new role.
yes it would be highly suspicious someone picking a job simply because it has clearance rather than getting the clearance simply because its nessary for the job.
Umm just aplie for the job and let the company worry about wether you need clearance. Its different to a police clearance which a job will say is a requirement and you have to seek (from my reading of the other posters in the thread)
no its just the part of the position in the job that I want to work for...the engineering part needs DOD clearance...
sounds like you cant work for that company then unless you get a job with someone else and they head hunt you or you coincidently get one through another company
