    With dual core and quad core, should not Solaris OS be an alternative to Vista/Windows 7? Why does not Sun do something here? They now have Open Office and MySQL.....that would be a poweful competition to Micorsoft.

    Just a thought.

    yeah sure...Solaris has got a battle to win against Linux, and that is never happening.

    Solaris X86, for intel, is used by Intel to make those dual and quad core chips by Intel... Solaris runs the fabs...

    it is a free download... Link to Solaris...

    it is the most sophisticated OS on the planet...

    and it is the best OS a person can run on a PC...

    it does not have much market share comparatively in the PC market...

    but implying that Linux is anywhere near the polish and maturity of Solaris is laughable...

    Solaris can manage more data than any OS on earth...

    multi-terbyte is aiming kinda low btw... real low actually...

    Solaris supports milti-Pecabyte(aka Petabyte)...

    and ZFS, invented by SUN and supported by Solaris, manages Zetabyte filesystems...

    i got your point, but you were aiming way too low... all the information ever created by man in the history of the mankind can't fill a Zetabyte...

    government...

    DCS1000 for example... internet/telecom/communications surveillance program was believed to be the reason for a zetabyte filesystem invention though it is of course classified...

    the government is the main user of data sizes that large...

    You Tube would be closing in ... i am thinking. Video streaming sites, media sites would require hefty database sizes...

    Since ZFS is a 128-bit file system, may be we need to get to the hardware and OS to that level...that would be very interesting. These chipsets are slowly emerging...

    the nature of ZFS itself is amazing... SUN makes such sophisticated technology and software... they really are on another level compared to every other company... Link to ZFS datasheet...

    SUN hardware runs it... but like Solaris is to OS's, SUN hardware is on another level compared to most anything else... SUN has been working on a pure 128 bit OS for years and are close to implementing it...

    what is known in 'popular' computing, like PC's, is usually when SUN technology has finally filtered down... or Intel has, yet again, decided that paying out millions and millions of dollars in a lawsuit doesn't make them stealing SPARC fab techniques and technology a bad idea...

    i've been running 64 bit OS and Hardware with SUN since 1998... to give you perspective...

    May be SUN could also work on a 128-bit CPU (not just register level) too to match with that OS...the need was not there, but now with massive data management and simulation needs....
