It does seem that it was something like a bolide exploding in front of the Moon.

Have you seen Earthstorm? It looks like similar poor quality SF B films but it is well done with good special effects, about an asteroid impact which threatens to break off a quarter of the Moon which will then come into earth's gravity pull and kill everyone.
