Is there any place on earth that is not under any form of jurisdiction by any organization or nation?
i dont know but, i know that in Tintern (near s wales UK) a group of travellers bought a plot of land that is known has greenbelt land and tintern cannot build houses on it. also there was a plot of land in chepstow where i lived that belonged to the people of chepstow, the person who owned it left it to the people of chepstow!
In Oceania there are hundreds of small islands not claimed by anyone. They are too small to be occupied and too far away from everything...
that map is wrong, for starters there are to many countries listed and secondly australia's share of antatica is MUCH bigger than the US's
There's the "open" ocean. No-one's claiming that, or the surface under it. Mind you, there is that Russian flag on the bottom of the Arctic Ocean.
This is the correct map of the claims on antatica Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! from wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antartica Actually i was wrong, australia's share isnt bigger than the US's. The US doesnt HAVE a sharePlease Register or Log in to view the hidden image! Of course not all countries recognise the claims on antatica as exampled by japans refusal to recognize our exclusive economic zone (which would put there waleing activities under the jusristriction of the australian courts and a breach of the fisheries laws of Australia)
OK, I have an idea. It's purely hypothetical, but, if someone were to go to Mars right now (i.e, a private space agency or something), could they claim the entire planet as the property of [insert company name here]?
norsefire, how many years till we would have a marbo style case from the martians? Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! Rember Australia was declared Terra Nulius (which is actually what i thought this thread was about when i saw the title) until the marbo case in the 80?'s
Claiming ownership is one thing, defending it when a stronger entity shows up is another. right now you can buy property on the moon. Question is, when somebody lands on your land, can you defend it? The same applies to Antarctis...
No I don't remember.......I'm not Australian...... Syz, the law would defend it. It'd be legally your land, and therefore, anyone trespassing would be considered a criminal. Right?
actually no, though there is a US flag on the moon international law forbids ANY country from claiming exclusive rights over space based resorces
The flag is the property of the US. The land is not. So there are laws protecting extraplanetary real estate? Interesting.
i belive it falls under the treaty which forbids the weaponisation of space but i could be wrong about that
