    What would make this happen?

I'm the only one on this machine and all of a sudden a lot of my file names are blue. Should it concern me?
    Windows XP, btw.

I don't know the answer, but the same thing has happened to me (also using XP). Some, but not all, of the file names have turned blue when I go searching for something. Otherwise, there is no effect on the files or my computer.

    You've never lost anything, though?

Got file compression turned on? Sometimes it gets turned on automatically.

    To disable:

    1. Select and right-click the files/folders
    2. Select Properties from the context menu
    3. Click the Advanced button
    4. Unclick Compress contents to save disk space
