I have tried a few free games, some seem quite good, others are not so great. Thought I would post links for those interested.

Places with links to free clients

    http://www.megagames.com/news/html/freegames/freegames.shtml
    http://www.onrpg.com/games_categories/free-mmorpg.html
    http://www.gamershell.com/client_download_archive.html
    http://www.gamershell.com/fullgame_download_archive.html

My favourites I have played are

    Rising eagle http://www.rising-eagle.com/

    True combat http://www.truecombatelite.net/

    penumbra (with mod) (http://www.megagames.com/news/show.cgi?&idtype=freegames&database=432&section=downloads&)

Far cry mod Tuesday and ark (http://farcry.filefront.com/file/Tuesday_Ark_Mod;64247) basically it's Ico inspired. I have retail version of farcry but there is a free version of far cry now (ad sponsored) so should be able to play with that.

FEAR http://www.gamershell.com/download_15038.shtml (I have retail too but the multiplayer is free and same as retail)

As for other mods for non free games my favs are

Conspiracies for Op Flashpoint (turns it into stalker basically)
FFUR for Op Flashpoint asian, euro, 2007 versions (updates flashpoint, complete overhaul but still not up to arma specs. I used to play asian and 2007 before arma came out)
    GWX2 for Silent hunter 3

My favorite free game is still SubSpace/Continuum

    http://www.subspacedownloads.com/

It's an old, top down arcade style game, but it's a lot of fun. Extreme Games is my favorite zone.

I haven't tried the ones you listed (except FEAR), but I'll give them a go once I'm back on a good connection.

penumbra is one of the most interesting I have seen with nice physics and well thought out when consider it was made by 4 students. Thinking about it being a free project it's surprisingly well done.

True combat I am fond of as although it's nothing special and has been seen before (and technically it's old tech) it's nice for a free quickfix fast paced team based shooter.

IMO free mmorpgs tend to be the weakest choice of free games, but maybe others would enjoy them. I tried quite a few mmorpg's like rappelz, last chaos, perfect world and various others but they often seem like a poor version of guildwars style mostly (which has it's faults too). I expect RPGs to have more substance than wandering around aimlessly killing rats or the like as is common with most open (and closed) betas and free clients. None seem to have good involving story or good character progression.

I don't expect any free game to be as polished or well designed as non free counterparts. I do expect them to be half decent though, many are trash. Still for free you cannot complain. Mod wise there are some that are a simple must have for owners of the game that expand so much on the original experience and really enhance the game (like ffur) or offer a completely different experience to the game it's based on (like that pirates mod for BF1942 years back, or tuesday and ark for far cry).

Rising eagle isn't too bad for a free game. It's kind of like Battlefield 2142. It has similar squad assignments and promotion system and so forth. Destructible environment is pretty cool (you can sledgehammer or demo charge many doors, walls etc). It's not that great graphically for what specs it needs to max out, and it can be glitchy and lag a bit but worth trying all the same I reckon. I think it's windows only, haven't found a mac or linux version (not tried in wine yet though).

True combat elite and a few others do have linux and mac versions available too.

Me too, played it since beta but it just got too time consuming for me, so I had to give it up. The Curse Alliance/Stain Alliance war is still one of my favorite game experiences though, epic.
