I was at my local indian resturant saturday night, and my husband ordered an Onion Bhaji, and i got to thinking, what does Bhaji mean, i thought it meant "ball" because onion bhajis look like balls, but then the mushroom bhaji came and it wasn't a ball, it was a mix of mushrooms with onions and sauces, so i asked the man who was serving us what it meant, and he didnt know, so anyone got any ideas?

or is it indian for "fritter"?

The confusion is in the pronounciation.

bhaji (short bha-) is a fritter made of any vegetable, usually coated with chickpea paste

bhaaji (long bhaa-) is a vegetable stir fry.
