Well, I was out and about last evening and while driving around I thought to myself it was about time to get a new TV. I have an old Sony that is 12 years old which still works just fine but only a 25 inch screen with normal screen width not this new wide screen thing. Anywho I saw a bunch of the new flat screens side by side and finally choose.....ta da....a Samsung LCD 50,000 to 1 contrast ratio, 1080 , 2 million pixels and 40 inch., with 16:9 aspect ratio. Most others didn't have that high of contrast ratios but cost the same or more in some cases. The model I got is the series 6, 650 . It weighs only 30 LBS and has a nice sound speaker system built into it. I liked it too because of the hard screen and less heat emanating from it than the plasmas and other LCD's.

I was waiting for the new laser TV but my patience has worn out. I really don't know why that type of system isn't out yet but I just was tired of waiting all last year and now nearly half of this year for it to be released. Now watch, laser TV's will hit the market next month! LOL! It would be just my luck. When I returned home I checked the prices online and found that with shipping I got a fair deal plus they will service the TV as well which is always a good thing in case of troubles. I also purchased a 5 year extended warranty in case anything happens after the 1 year warranty expires.

So now I'm watching it and it is very enjoyable to view. I think I'll upgrade to a HD format with my satellite cable system to see this TV's full potential. I have to buy new equipment in order to receive the HD channels and pay more for those channels if I receive them. I really don't know what the difference will be but I'll give it a shot for a month to see the differences and if they are that outstanding, I'll switch over to the HD format for good. I'm very satisfied with this new wide screen TV and only wish I would have bought one sooner.

Meanwhile, I'm looking at getting a flat screen TV at point, probably in the autumn, once I've redecorated my front room, and re-arranged the furniture etc. Currently I have a regular CRT in a cabinet, but I can lose that and have the TV over the fireplace, and reclaim the space where the cabinet was, and that will give me room for this rather ncie coffee table I've seen too, ....

I also want to build a media centre PC to accompany my new TV, so I can stream TV from the BBC iPLayer, and 4OD, and use a digital terrestrial receiver and record TV progs etc. Plus I will have all my mp3's on there, and use remote speakers around the house, and I've seen some software that allows remote control of Windows Media Centre from a PDA.

Add to that the fact that we'll be able to web browse, and play computer games, it's all looking pretty nifty, I just hope it's all done in time for when the nights draw in next winter!

    Pointers:

    1. The aspect ratio can be changed, it probably has 4-6 different.

    2. Do not buy HD cabel from the store. They charge $50 and you can get it online under $10.

    3. You might don't even need HD cabel, we are hooked up without it.

    4. Extended warranty usually is a ripoff, but with a high priced item it might be worthy...

    5. If you have a game consol, gaming is a huge enjoyment on it...Try a flight simulator, it is gorgeous...

    Enjoy!

Hope you don't use it as monitor and start typing in small fonts while posting here.

Hope you see only 'benhur' and '10 commandments' (no porn) for first 4 weeks.

Hope after 4 weeks you don't jump into the screen.

how big is it? What did it cost?

I want to get an HD TV and use it as a monitor for my computer. Just get a small one, like a 20 inch or so.

I am using my existing 3 cable wires to get it hooked up until I get the new saellite box then I will switch over to the new cable to see if there's a difference or not. Either way I'll use the new cable.

I agree that when you pay this kind of money you should get the extended warranty. They told me if anything ever happened they would just give me a new set! That I'll wait and see if if ever does breakl down within 5 years.

    5. If you have a game consol, gaming is a huge enjoyment on it...Try a flight simulator, it is gorgeous...

Well, I have a monitor already to enjoy games on. It is just fine so I won't be using the new TV for anything but movies and TV.

    Enjoy

    Thank you.

Nope, that won't happen. The TV is 40 inches!!

Well, I'll be enjoying many movies on it in the coming years.

Juyst curious, why did you choose an LCD and not Plasma? I am starting to like LCDs more (for two reasons) but Plasma has better image.

It was easy for me to see the differences when they were side by side at the store. The plasma also was giving off allot more heat when I put my hand near the screen. The plasma also uses more energy and doesn't have the life expectancy of a LCD.

Start smaller, they aren't that expensive as the big ones are.
