So one day I find this Sciforums thing and I find it engaging. First time any of these things struck me as worth the effort of typing.
Anyway, there's this guy I encounter early on who seems quite irreverent, occasionally blasphemous, and is funny as hell. In other words, my kinda guy.;)
It turns out he take snaps.
Photos.
Pitchuas'.
He must be a real tiny little guy tho. I mean, to be able to get that close to those bugs...;)
Seriously, tho: They are amazing!!! Just fucking amazing!!! You gotta check this site!
Many of you already know about this guy's work, but if not, go see, go see.

Enmos' pics fucking rock! Rock like Eddie Van Halen on really good speed.
Enmos quick photo question. I was trying to take some images at last nights Christmas eve dinner with a digital camera. I was using a "night" setting without a flash, which was giving me the warm glow of light I wanted, but all my pics were shaky and unclear. Any suggestions? Maybe less coffee and a tripod...or a faster shutter setting?

If you truly want great pictures in dim light situations you need a DSLR with a lightning fast lens. Shooting in dim light situations is always difficult with a normal digital camera. In fact, I usually avoid it ;)
Not much bugs after dark any way eh ? lol
A tripod might help but keep in mind that if someone moves it will show in the picture due to the long shutter time. Only quick solution is to use flash I'm afraid.. or have everyone sit still while you take the photo.
Thanks Mac, you have a wonderful Christmas !! :)

Do you sit and wait for those photos to come together or is it just luck? I just don't notice things like that. I've never slowed down enough to notice. :(

Actually they are all around. Once you get into it you see them everywhere :D
Of course I have a few fav spots, for the dragonflies for example.

Just if you know its gonna be a full moon and a foggy night, so you plan to take pics. Or are you walking by the window, see the moon against a foggy background, go get the camera?

I don't do nights though :p
Actually, I plan most of my 'shoots'. After work I just go to one or some of my spots and see what's there. Sometimes I'll go find some new territory :)
I always take note of the weather of course in my decisions where to go. The foggy images for example, I saw it was particularly foggy, got in the car in drove to the spot I took the images. I knew the surroundings there, but there was some luck involved of course..
So.. I don't know.. a little bit of everything I suppose.

I use a Nikon Coolpix 8700.. an 'older' compact digital camera really.
So no extra lenses, only the fixed one ;)
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Nikon/nikon_cp8700.asp
- 8 mp
- 8x optical zoom
- 3 cm macro focus range
I never use a tripod, not much use with insects anyway.
Don't shoot at night either.. as my interest mainly lies with insects and other small critters :)

Yea.. but I won't.
I do minor contrast and color enhancements now, any more and it will become more of an artwork than photography.
This will either do or it won't.. anyway.. I'm not really that interested in any sort of recognition. It's a hobby.

Hobby? Hobby? No, my friend, what I saw was no mere hobby! It's just a vocation you've yet to figure out how to avail yourself of.

Enmos: Incorrect.
I enter dozens, if not hundreds, of photo competitions every year and I have yet to see one that doesn't allow an image that hasn't been posted on forums/other photo comps etc. They will however stipulate that the photo can't have been published - that means in actual book print on sale in a shop, not pasted on a forum or your own webspace.
If you're in England I can give you links to many photo comps. Let me know.

Different culture, life, look, feel, I guess:shrug:. I was only there for three days before I flew to Sorrento, Italy; so I was unable to see most of the Netherlands. I just enjoy being away from usual life (which is very rare), so almost anywhere different seems beautiful to me.
Dont worry, it wasn't nessesarily the "De wallen" that appealed to me most.

LOL that's not what I meant. I'm just surprised that whenever people talk about a foreign country they have been to being beautiful, they refer to the marvels cities there.
I cannot understand why anybody would find them beautiful..
To me the beautiful of a country is directly related to the nature there.

I saw a little of the Netherlands outside of Amsterdam. Those windmills add a very scenic effect. I really could have stayed longer and gone to different places, but keep in mind that I was traveling with a lot of my realtives and in addition to that, I'm only 16. Since I had very little influence on where my relatives were going, I just made the most out of it. :o

Ok.. lol
The Netherlands has some nice places but there are lots and lots of countries that I think are more beautiful.. maybe it's because I grew up here and I don't see it anymore.

These ones are quite fun - I took them with nothing more fancy than a phone camera pointed down the eyepiece of a microscope.
they are crab larvae - the first one is masked crab: Corystes cassivelaunus
and the second is a common shore crab Carcinus Maenas

Chaetophora spinosa?

Thanks ! It's def. a Byrrhidae sp.
Thanks for the push into the right direction.
You got be spot on though, but I like to verify it myself by investigating the other species :)
Do you make money from photography?
No.. I've been told by people to try something in that direction though. For now it's just a hobby :)
if people want to make money in photography they better take pictures of something totally exquisite...not just squirrels in the park or flowers or even insects...nope...they need to go crawl into caves and take picture high definition of lets say bats with closed eyes...they need to take pictures of the flowing waters in North Pole and Greenland ice shelf lakes...

You definitely could with those skills. Of course, I could understand if it's something you like so much you don't want to ruin it by making it your job.

Oh...the second one is much better. Much more contrast...and the greens and yellows of the images just pop on the black background. I actually like the font and logo in the header of the first one..the second header, IMHO, needs something to fill the empty space on either side of the text...like your little logo thing...and maybe a different background color that blends more with the greens and yellows of the images, and beige of the text headers.
But what the fuck do I know...I'm just a computer tech. :)

I agree.. something needs to be done with the header. I was planning on putting a logo in the black space above the menu on the left.
Need to think about that header though..

Have you considered making a coffee table book with your pictures and publishing it? You could do several on the themes in your blog.

I think the best thing to do is use my sciforum's avatar, and tile it, and use that as your background..as this would obviously increase site traffic by several orders of magnitude. :) j/k
The more I look at it...the more I am amazed by the difference in just switching from a white to black background and removing the grey bars makes. My eye is drawn more toward the images...and hey...the images are what it's all about...right? :) Even though I'm looking at the exact same image in both windows, the one on the black background seems to have more brilliant color.
Just a thought...what about going with a grey header background, to keep all of the color in the images?
I like the white background, the black is hard on the eyes, especially if you try to read
Enmos could you add RSS to your blog so I know when you add new pics? :p
Guys, your opinions please :)
looks real good. i have always been partial to dark backgrounds so i would go with the second layout. But then not necessarily but something slightly higher up on the grey scale.

Wow...the colors in that photo are so brilliant and beautiful, it made me forget I was looking at two bugs fucking.
Edit:
That reminds me of a joke.
A young native American boy approached his father and asks him: "Father, from where do I get my name?"
The father replied "After your grandfather was born, the first thing his father saw was an eagle flying in the sky...and so he named his son "Soaring Eagle". When I was born, the first thing my father saw was a deer running through the forest, and he gave me the name "Running Deer". Does this answer your question, son?"
The son replied: "Yes, father."
"Good, now go finish your chores, Two Dogs Humping." :)

Ahhh!! that's what Enmos needs to add to his website..a slide show with all his bug sex pictures, with 70's porn music playing the the background..complete with "wacka wacka" guitars. :)
Geez! I had the same exact thought! [minus the guitars and wrong year, I thought of 80s]

Gray is a good idea. Thanks :)
I was thinking of putting a silhouette in the header like a tree line or something.
Perhaps a grayish green would look good.
i find that grey is easier on the eyes. what do you think of 444444?
I like the white background, the black is hard on the eyes, especially if you try to read
Enmos could you add RSS to your blog so I know when you add new pics? :p
I've heard more people say that. However the majority thinks black looks better, especially for a photo website.
I have been thinking of toning down the bright white text a bit.. that might help a bit I guess.
Anyway, I think I'll stick with the black background. Thanks for your input though :)
RSS feed ?lol
I'm still just using plain old html.. I wish I knew how to write php though.

Yes, lets hope so :D
i base my observation on tests carried out at hiroshima and other a-bomb test sites. insects were the first forms of life to appear and survive the radiation.
bugs are pretty cool but they are ugly. for me it is that they are crunchy that gets to me. as i stated before, i would look to ways to see if we can do away with some and trim the herd a little.

It seems to be an odd time for them.. although I have no clue whether or not they grow all year round.
I know a spot where some Amanita's grow in the middle of the winter (if it's not too cold). I think they are gemmata's, but I haven't made a definitive ID though.

As long as you don't make any close ups of your private parts on post it on a christian forum I guess photography is almost an ok hobby.

I wish that your website would show the pictures at a higher resolution.
Also, you should totally be making money out of these. Posters, postcards, etc.

Thanks Varda :)
I don't show them at a higher resolution because then they could be used for stuff (without my consent) more easily.
Well, I just wanted to look at them, but now I have the urge to use some of them without your consent.
:p

You can use them for private (non-commercial) use.

Awesome work. I also photograph. I might make a sight soon. I'm currently using a Pentax Super ME (SLR).

Maybe you could post a few of your pictures here (on in your own thread) when you reach a post count of 20. That would be awesome :)
What kind of stuff do you photograph?

Mountain ranges mostly. I won't be able to post my newest photos yet (of Mt. Rushmore) but I can post my stuff from my old digital camera (crappy quality)...
